The Malone Brothers
with Michael Gulezian

Genre: Americana
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

Dave and Tommy Malone, two of Louisiana's greatest guitarist singer-songwriters, have joined forces to form one of the most exciting new lineups in American music. Both men have spent most of their adult lives in legendary bands, but when Dave's band "The Radiators" called it quits in June of 2011 and Tommy's band "the subdudes" decided to go on hiatus, the stage was set for the long awaited Malone Brothers band. The two had grown up in Edgard, Louisiana, and after high school they moved to their birthplace...New Orleans... and formed Dustwoofie, a popular band among Tulane University students. The brothers later worked together in groups such as the Malone Rangers and Monkey Ranch but their current collaboration is their most fully realized musical entity yet. The brothers are both superb accompanists as well as leaders, making their trade-off even more exciting. Separately and together they have written numerous great songs recorded by their own bands and other world famous musicians and are revered for their guitaristic excellence. The combination is a musical experience that fans of both men have wanted to hear for years. - John Swenson

Kelly Joe Phelps
with John Statz

Genre:
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

A writer for the San Diego Troubadour described guitarist and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps as, “The Phantom Monk Of Folk- Blues,” and rightly so. Throughout his 18 years on the road and 8 solo CD releases, Phelps has been talked about as much for his passionate, spirit-driven, solitary musical ways as for the inventiveness of his playing and singing. A New York Times concert reviewer wrote: “...his airy playing conjuring a pocket of supernatural space. He manipulated his fretboard to create eerie harmonics as he slipped from a mumble to a falsetto, as if to follow the soul beyond the physical realm.” Uncut Magazine, reviewing a London show, wrote: “...to ripple and snake into unknown territory for the country blues he allegedly played, to squeeze out sounds touching the searching jazz that had once been his trade, to mutate through more layers than twelve strings should hold. And the songs; their pleas for mercy beyond the grave healed the spirit in ways disbelievers, in Bibles or Blues, could feel.”

Genre: Hard Country
Doors: 7:30PM
Show: 8:30 PM

They’ve been called “country,” “alt-country,” and “outlaw country,” but the phrase that best describes the Railbenders is "hard country.” This Denver band plays unabashed, straight-no-chaser music that pulls no punches and offers no apologies for the love of some of the finer things in life: whiskey, women, song, and good timin’ friends. While their songs are soaked in traditional country influence, their punk background gives them a jagged edge appeal.

Elephant Revival
with Special Guest

Genre: Transcendental Folk
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

That simple line atop Elephant Revival’s Facebook page contains only five words, but reveals volumes about the band’s reason for being. Music unites us in ways that no other medium can. Even when we don’t understand one another’s languages — we can be moved by a rhythm, soothed by a song. Brought together by a unified sense of purpose — the spirit of five souls working as one, in harmony, creating sounds they could never produce alone. The five souls in Elephant Revival are Sage Cook (banjo, guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, bass and fiddle); Bridget Law (fiddle, octave fiddle); Bonnie Paine (washboard, djembe, musical saw, stompbox); Daniel Rodriguez (guitar, banjo, bass); and Dango Rose (double-bass, mandolin, banjo). All share vocals and write songs. Paine delivers additional beats via footstomps on plywood, her stockinged feet doing near jigs as her hands, encased in antique leather gloves, rub silver nickel against corrugated metal. This Nederland, Colo., quintet are, needless to say, quite a sight — especially when they fall into the pocket of a groove containing elements of gypsy, rock, Celtic, alt-country and folk. The Indie Acoustic Project simply labels their sound “progressive edge.” At least, that’s the category in which it placed the band when it gave their Ruff Shod/Nettwerk Records release, BREAK IN THE CLOUDS, a best CD of 2011 award. It’s as good a label as any to convey what Rose has described as their mission: “to close the gap of separation between us through the eternal revelry of song and dance.”

Tony Lucca
with Justin Hopkins

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Doors: 7:00PM
Show: 8:00PM

Tony Lucca’s life-long immersion in music and his ever-deepening life experiences have resulted in a potently affecting body of work: his lyrics and vocal quality are instantly identifiable, even to those who have heard his music once or twice. Raised in Waterford, Michigan, Lucca began singing at age 3; by 12 he was writing and playing in Detroit-area bands. As a teen, he lived in Orlando, Florida, where he worked for four seasons on the Disney Channel’s “Mickey Mouse Club” alongside such future superstars as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and *Nsync’s Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez. It wasn’t until the Michigan-native turned 18 and moved to Los Angeles that he realized his true potential as a legitimate artist. After familiarizing himself with the landscape, Lucca began writing and recording music with some of the most talented artists and players around. Lucca, who is based in Los Angeles, went the Internet route and sold his first two independent releases, his debut “So Satisfied” (1997) and the follow-up “Strong Words, Softly Spoken” (1999), through his own website. His first commercially distributed album, “Shotgun,” arrived in 2004. It was succeeded by his Rock Ridge Music debut “Canyon Songs” (2006) and “Come Around Again” (2008), “Rendezvous With The Angels” (2010), and Lucca’s most recent release, “Under The Influence,” which came out in 2011 (a 10-song compilation of tunes by artists that influenced Lucca as a musician and songwriter). His songs have been featured on TV’s “Friday Night Lights,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Shark,” and “Felicity” and in Kevin Costner’s feature “Open Range.” He has been seen on E! Entertainment Television and A&E, and performed numerous times on NBC’s “Last Call With Carson Daly.” In 2011, he appeared as himself on NBC’s “Parenthood” performing his song “Like Love.” Lucca was also tapped to appear in friend Justin Timberlake’s 901 tequila commercial spot. Over the course of his career, Lucca has shared stages with *Nsync, Marc Anthony, Macy Gray, Johnny Lang, the late Chris Whitley, Sara Bareilles, and Tyrone Wells. Lucca has also completed several cooperative tours with Jay Nash and Matt Duke (which resulted in “TFDI,” a collaborative EP recorded at SPACE in Evanston, Illinois, and released by Rykodisc in late 2009, and “When I Stop Running,” a full-length album by the trio that was released by Rock Ridge Music in the summer of 2011).

After leading several popular ‘80s cult bands in and around his hometown of Lawrence, Kansas, Chuck Mead landed on Nashville’s Lower Broadway where he co-founded the famed ‘90s Alternative Country quintet BR549. The band’s seven albums, three Grammy nominations and the Country Music Association Award for Best Overseas Touring Act would build an indelible bridge between authentic American Roots music and millions of fans worldwide. With BR on hiatus, Chuck formed The Hillbilly All-Stars featuring members of The Mavericks, co-produced popular tribute albums to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, guest-lectured at Vanderbilt University, and became a staff writer at one of Nashville’s top song publishers. In 2009, he released his acclaimed solo debut album, Journeyman’s Wager, and toured clubs, concert halls and international Rock, Country and Rockabilly festivals with his band The Grassy Knoll Boys. Chuck’s new album, Back At The Quonset Hut, was recorded at Nashville’s legendary Quonset Hut Studio where Patsy Cline, George Jones, Merle Haggard Roger Miller, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and more cut some of country’s greatest tracks. Produced by original BR549 producer Mike Janas and with the participation of students from Belmont University’s College of Entertainment and Music Business, the album of classic covers features surviving members of Music Row’s original ‘A Team’ studio musicians as well as guest appearances by Old Crow Medicine Show, Elizabeth Cook, Jamie Johnson and Bobby Bare. “It’s been incredibly liberating to do all these things I’ve never done before,” Chuck says. “I’ve already gone from the bars of Lower Broadway in Nashville to the Broadway stage, and the upcoming album is one of the most unique and rewarding projects I’ve ever been a part of. I’m looking forward to where it all brings me next”.

Both musicians were unsure, but excited at the prospect. As Rydell states, “I would be lying if I said I hadn't dreamt about working with Angie in a larger capacity than our previous impromptu performances. I had no idea what to expect, which in retrospect, I think was a good thing, because it left a totally blank canvas for us to work with.” Stevens echoes her thoughts, “I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have always been intrigued by Haley’s writing style and musical abilities. I hoped it wouldn’t be awkward!” And the band “I’m With Her” was born.

An independent musician with the heart of a geek, Jonathan Coulton is a Yale graduate who left his day-job as a computer programmer to stay home and write songs. Between 2005 and 2006 he wrote, recorded, and published a new song every week as a free podcast project called "Thing a Week." This year-long experiment produced 52 consistently well-written and solidly produced songs, and he soon became an internet sensation. Jonathan's songs cover unusual topics not often heard in music and tend to make even the most jaded listeners excited about music again. A number of Jonathan's songs have become full-fledged internet hits: his folk-rock cover of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" the unrequited love of a mad scientist in "Skullcrusher Mountain," and "Code Monkey," the anthem of software designers everywhere. The office zombie song "Re: Your Brains" made the Dr. Demento Funny 25 countdown for 2006.

Genre: Alternative Rock
Doors: 9:00PM
Show: 10:00PM

Alt-rock icons Cracker have signed with 429 Records and have unleashed a collection of new songs, SUNRISE IN THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY. Long-time musical cohorts David Lowery and Johnny Hickman have teamed up again with drummer Frank Funaro and bassist Sal Maida and along with stellar producer David Barbe (Drive By Truckers), have created a uniquely eclectic trove of new tunes. Well-worn words used to describe their sound—brash, irreverent, sharp-witted, anthemic and riveting—all descriptives are in full-effect on the new project that bursts with their trademark rock, punk, glam, surf and country aesthetic. Friends John Doe, Patterson Hood and Adam Duritz also make spirited guest turns on SUNRISE... Taking a new approach to their creative process, SUNRISE IN THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY is a truly collaborative effort for the band. Suprisingly self-disciplined, the whole band would take time out to write together one week every two months between tours over the course of a year. Focusing on a goal of two songs per day, their individual musical influences combined in refreshing and distinctive ways. On the outside it was a straight ahead work ethic, but the process resulted in the band clicking creatively with a renewed energy. Says Lowery: “We weren’t kicking back on an island in the Caribbean, waiting for the muse to hit us. We got down to work, found the punk and glam rock in our blood and woke up to Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey.”
