At The Gates Biography
A pioneering force on the melodic death metal scene, At The Gates helped establish the Gothenburg
sound that would continue to infiltrate rock music long after their initial mid-90s split. Formerly of
black metal outfit Grotesque, guitarist Alf Svensson and frontman Tomas Lindberg first hooked up
with guitarist Anders Bjorler, his bassist brother Jonas and drummer Adrian Erlandsson in 1990 and
shortly after, began releasing At The Gates tickets for various shows in their hometown. After
releasing their debut E.P., Gardens of Grief, in 1991 and At The Gates tickets for tours with Bolt
Thrower and Dismember, the band signed to Peaceville Records and ventured into the studio for
their first full-length LP, The Red In The Sky Is Ours. Following the release of 1993 follow-up With
Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness, and At The Gates tickets for an accompanying tour, Svensson left to
pursue a career in tattoo illustration and comic artistry, and was replaced by The House of Usher’s
Martin Larsson. The band subsequently embarked on a tour of Europe and recorded an MTV
Headbangers Ball special in front of hundreds of UK fans with At The Gates tickets. 1994’s Terminal
Spirit Disease was then followed up a year later by Slaughter of the Soul, a critical and commercial
hit which is widely regarded as one of the death metal genre’s seminal albums. US audiences also
began to snap up At The Gates tickets when one of its singles, “Blinded By Fear,” became an unlikely
MTV staple, while tours with Morbid Angel and Napalm Death also boosted their international
profile. However, following the Bjorler brothers’ departure in 1996, the band decided to call it a day,
with Erlandsson going on to join the aforementioned to form The Haunted and Lindberg perform
with the likes of The Crown, Lock Up and Nightrage. In 2008, the band announced the sale of At The
Gates tickets for a series of reunion shows including festival sets at Roskilde, Gods of Metal and
Wacken Open Air. Encouraged by the high demand for At The Gates tickets, the group also
embarked on a tour of Japan with The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pig Destroyer and Into Eternity, and hit
the States for the Suicidal Final Tour. The group continued to tour sporadically throughout the next
five years, releasing At The Gates tickets for performances at Metaltown, Brutal Assault and Sweden
Rock Festival. Despite previously claiming they had no interest in recording again, the group then
issued a brand new concept album inspired by the literary genre of magic realism, At War with
Reality, in late 2014.
