Bastille Biography

It’s hard to think of a new band that had a bigger 2013 than Bastille. The London-based synth pop band began 2014 earning an appearance on Saturday Night Live as well as a BRIT Award for “Best Breakthrough Act” after selling two million copies of their debut album Bad Blood in the U.K. alone. What started as a solo project by 26-year-old singer/songwriter Dan Smith (whose birthday is on Bastille Day) has since evolved into a full four-piece band with an unusually wide international appeal. In addition to lead vocals, Smith plays keyboards, percussion, and synths with the help of bassist/keyboardist/percussionist Kyle Simmons, guitarist/keyboardist/bassist William Farquarson and drummer Chris Wood to create their sprawling, cinematic indie pop sound that has millennials clamoring for Bastille tickets across the globe. But things weren’t always so easy. Debuting in London in 2010 with singles “Flaws” and “Icarus” released through independent label Young & Lost Club, only 300 copies of the band’s debut were made as Bastille struggled to find an audience. But they pressed on, continuing to post songs online through YouTube and MySpace, including tracks from their debut 2011 EP Laura Palmer. The songs (along with their accompanying viral videos) slowly began to build a loyal online following, which led to Bastille earning opening gigs for artists like British singer/songwriter Emeli Sande as well as appearances at U.K. festivals like Glastonbury and Isle of Wight. Their songs were also featured on the British soap opera Hollyoaks, which helped attract a wider following. Soon after The Guardian newspaper named them “Band of the Day” in July 2012, Bastille tickets were released for a small headlining tour called Flaws Tour in October. Although their first two singles were released with little fanfare, that same month their third single “Flaws” was released in the U.K., peaking at number 21 on the U.K. singles chart. But it wasn’t until the February 2013 release of their fourth single “Pompeii” that the band truly exploded Mount Vesuvius-style. The single charted at number two in the U.K. and number five in the U.S., paving the way for the March 2013 of debut album Bad Blood, which debuted at number one in the U.K. Powered by dramatic Gregorian chants laid over a sea of cascading synths, the video for “Pompeii” has since been viewed on YouTube nearly 70 million times. Suddenly, Bastille tickets were in huge demand, earning the band an opening slot for British rock stars Muse as well as their first festival headlining slot at England’s Blissfields. Known for powerful Pink Floyd-style light shows and elaborate touches on stage like a live string quartet, fans with Bastille tickets were soon spreading the word that this was a band on the cusp of something big. With Bad Blood going platinum in the U.K. and being nominated for “British Album of the Year” at the 2014 BRIT Awards, there was an increasing amount of evidence backing up this claim. In January 2014, Bastille tickets were released for three North American shows which all quickly sold out, as fans were eager to score Bastille tickets and see the biggest-selling debut act of 2013 in person. Bastille tickets have since been released for a major international tour that currently has the band performing in Europe from Paris to Prague to Switzerland through March 23. Additional Bastille tickets were also made available for a 27-date North American leg of the tour that kicks off in Chicago March 31 and ends in New York June 6. The band will then play an additional 20 international dates from Latvia to Ibiza to Australia, where fans with Bastille tickets will rejoice in seeing what could be one of the biggest new bands in a generation.
