Crosby, Stills & Nash Biography
One of the most successful super-groups of all time, Crosby, Stills & Nash have undergone a series of line-up changes and acrimonious break-ups during their 40+ year career but remain a huge live draw whenever they tour. The Byrds’ David Crosby, Buffalo Springfield’s Stephen Stills and The Hollies’ Graham Nash initially came together in the late 60s, having each left their respective bands, and first showcased their trademark folk-rock sound and intricate harmonies on 1969 debut Crosby Stills & Nash. Stills’ former bandmate Neil Young then joined the line-up in the same year before the quartet played their first ever live show at Chicago’s Auditorium Theater with Joni Mitchell. Their subsequent set at Woodstock was widely regarded as one of the festival’s standouts, whilst the band’s increasing popularity was confirmed with 1970’s number one sophomore, Déjà Vu. Crosby Stills, Nash & Young tickets sold out for their resulting tour, but following constant bouts of in-fighting, the band imploded shortly after. Each member embarked on a solo career, but 1971’s chart-topping live album Four Way Street kept the band’s name in the spotlight, whilst Crosby & Nash recorded an LP together and also joined Young on his Time Fades Away tour. The four-piece regrouped in 1974 for their first stadium tour and a No.1 compilation, So Far, but once again split soon after. Crosby & Nash then continued to work together on Wind On The Water and Whistling Down The Wire, whilst 1977’s Long May You Run became the only release from The Stills-Young Band. Reuniting as a trio, Crosby, Stills & Nash tickets then went on sale for several tours to promote 1977’s CSN, which spawned their biggest hit, “Just A Song Before I Go,” and 1982’s Daylight Again, whilst Young briefly returned for 1988’s American Dream. A string of commercial disappointments followed in the 90s (Live It Up, After The Storm, Looking Forward), although 1997 saw them inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. However they cemented their status as one of the classic rock scene’s most successful touring acts in the 00s, as Crosby, Stills & Nash tickets were snapped up for CSNY2K in 2000, CSNY Tour of America in 2002 and Freedom of Speech in 2006. In 2009, Crosby, Stills & Nash performed at Glastonbury with Young also appearing as a solo artist, whilst in 2012, the three-piece embarked on a series of dates across North America, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil.
