Fronted by the Wilson sisters Nancy and Ann, Heart helped to pave the way for a generation of female hard rockers but achieved their greatest success when they embraced the sound of 80s hair metal for a string of chart-topping power ballads. Formed in the mid-60s by bassist Steve Fossen and guitarist Roger Fisher, the original core line-up of Heart settled several years later when Ann and Nancy Wilson joined the fold alongside drummer Michael Derosier and guitarist Howard Leese. The band struck gold with their first release, selling over a million copies of 1975’s Dreamboat Annie, with its third single, “Magic Man,” also hitting the US Top 10. Following a move from Mushroom to Portrait, and a subsequent legal battle, Heart continued their winning streak with 1977’s Little Queen and 1978’s Dog and Butterfly.

Following Fossen and Fisher’s departure, the band initially struggled to sustain their success into the 80s with both the self-produced Private Audition and follow-up Passionworks barely making a dent in the Top 40. However, after undergoing a hair metal makeover, both visually and sonically, Heart experienced a major career revival. 1985’s self-titled studio effort topped the Billboard 200 and spawned five major hits including the group’s first number one single, “These Dreams.” 1987’s Bad Animals produced another chart-topper in the shape of epic power ballad “Alone” and 1990’s Brigade gave them a third consecutive US Top 3 entry.

The rest of the decade saw the Wilson sisters expand their musical horizons, forming an all-female quartet, The Lovemongers, to record 1997’s Whirlygig and 1998’s Here Is Christmas, with Nancy releasing a solo album, Live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop and scoring the first of many films directed by husband Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire, and Ann touring with an eponymous backing band. After a lengthy hiatus, Heart reunited with a new-line up for a 2002 tour and a 2004 album, Jupiters Darling, in which they returned to their hard rock roots.

Ann then launched a solo career with 2007’s star-studded Hope & Glory, before returning to her day job for a North American tour with fellow 70s rock survivors, Journey. Heart then scored their first US Top 10 album in 20 years with 2010’s Red Velvet Car, while 2012’s Fanatic was followed by an autobiography from the Wilsons, an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and a seasonal collection, Home For The Holidays.
