The driving force behind roots rock legends Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty also staked his claim as one of the world’s leading singer/guitarists during a sporadic solo career which produced Grammy-winning and chart-topping success. Born in Berkeley, California in 1945, Fogerty took guitar lessons from the founder of his hometown’s folk festival, Barry Olivier, and formed his first band with his brother, Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets, while at high school. With a lineup also featuring bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford, the group evolved into The Golliwogs and then more famously, Creedence Clearwater Revival, where John took his sibling’s place as frontman and chief songwriter.
Following their 1968 self-titled debut, the quartet became a regular fixture on the Billboard charts, reaching number one with both 1969’s Green River and 1970’s Cosmo’s Factory, and scoring a string of classic Top 10 hits including “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising” and “Fortunate Son.” However, following disputes over creative control, the group gradually fell apart, officially disbanding in 1972.
Fogerty wasted little time in launching a solo career, releasing an album of country cover versions under the guise of The Blue Ridge Rangers just a year later before recording under his own name for 1975’s eponymous sophomore. But this creative spurt proved to be short-lived thanks to a record company battle which kept him out of action for nearly a decade.
Fogerty eventually returned in style in 1985 with Centerfield, which not only topped the Billboard 200 but also spawned his only solo Top 10 hit, “The Old Man Down the Road.” 1986’s Eye of the Zombie soon followed but its commercial failure saw Fogerty embark on another lengthy recording hiatus. Inspired by a trip to Robert Johnson’s grave, he began regularly performing CCR material for the first time since their split at the turn of the 90s, but refused to appear on stage with the surviving members during the band’s Rock and Rock Hall of Fame induction in 1993.
Five years later, Fogerty picked up his first Grammy Award for fifth solo LP, Blue Moon Swamp, and released the live album, Premonition, before taking another break from the music scene. 2004 comeback Deju Vu (All Over Again) was then followed by appearances on the Vote For Change Tour and support slots with John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson. Fogerty then enjoyed a relatively prolific streak, releasing Revival in 2007, The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again in 2009 and Wrote a Song For Everyone, a collaborative retrospective featuring the likes of Bob Seger, Foo Fighters and Brad Paisley, in 2011.
