John Legend Biography

Fusing classic old-school soul with contemporary R&B and hip-hop, singer-songwriter John Legend has been described as the modern-day answer to Marvin Gaye. Born John Roger Stephens in Springfield, Ohio in 1978, he began playing the piano and singing in his gospel church choir aged just five years old. Whilst studying English at the University of Pennsylvania, he became the President of a co-ed jazz/pop acappella group named Counterparts but got his first big break in 1998 when he was invited to play piano on the Lauryn Hill single “Everything Is Everything.” Whilst honing his craft performing in clubs across Washington D.C., New York, and Atlanta, he became a management consultant for Boston Consulting Group before he was hired to sing the melodic hooks for a then unknown Kanye West, who promptly signed him to his label. Adopting the guise of John Legend on the advice of poet J. Ivy, he contributed backing vocals to tracks by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z before releasing his 2004 Grammy winning debut album, Get Lifted, signature track, “Ordinary People,” and John Legend tickets for his first headline tour. Legend’s 2006 sophomore album, Once Again peaked at No.3 in the US, leading to performances at Live Earth, the Super Bowl XL pre-game show and a sell-out date at Madison Square Garden, whilst 2008’s Evolver spawned his biggest hit single, the Andre 3000-featuring, “Green Light.” Fans who missed out on John Legend tickets for his 2008 tour got the chance to experience it with the Target stores tie-in Live From Philadelphia and following brief appearances in comedy Soul Men and 2009 documentary, The People Speak, he teamed up with The Roots for an entire album, Wake Up!, which went onto pick up two awards at the 2011 Grammys. Legend continued this collaborative streak by being featured on tracks by artists as diverse as jazz legend Herbie Hancock, dubstep trio Magnetic Man, and Latin pop star Tiziano Ferro, whilst also embarking on a 50-date tour supporting British soul veteran Sade. After being awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Howard University and acting as a mentor alongside Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, and Robin Thicke on the ABC talent show, Duets, John Legend tickets were made available for several live shows to promote his upcoming 2013 fourth studio album, Love In The Future.
