Neutral Milk Hotel Biography
The brainchild of enigmatic vocalist/guitarist Jeff Magnum, Neutral Milk Hotel sold few records during their original ‘90s spell, but their experimental fuzz-folk sound was cited as a major inspiration by a generation of indie musicians. Part of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, a collective of lo-fi indie artists founded in Denver, Magnum first began recording under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker in the late 80s, independently releasing a number of demo cassettes including Invent Yourself a Shortcake, Beauty and Hype City Soundtracks.
Magnum then spent several years performing with The Olivia Tremor Control members Will Cullen Hart and Bill Doss under the guise of Cranberry Life Cycle before going solo again in the early ‘90s. His first official release, the Everything Is E.P., arrived in 1994 and was followed two years later by On Avery Island, a full-length studio effort which featured backing from Secret Square’s Lisa Janssen, The Perry Weissman 3’s Rick Benjamin and The Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider, the latter of whom also served as producer.
Neutral Milk Hotel then became a fully-fledged band shortly after when multi-instrumentalists Jeremy Barnes, Scott Spillane and Julian Koster permanently joined the fold. Inspired by the tragic story of Holocaust victim Anne Frank, 1998 sophomore LP In the Aeroplane Over the Sea received huge critical acclaim and despite a slow commercial start, gradually shifted over 300,000 copies. However, the record’s accompanying year-long tour eventually took its toll on Magnum, and after disbanding the group in 1999, he suffered a nervous breakdown.
Despite the split, the band’s popularity continued to grow in the 21st Century, with bands such as Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand and Bon Iver all referencing their sound as a source of inspiration, while the likes of Brand New, The Dresden Dolls and Kevin Devine all paid tribute with various covers. Magnum slowly began to return to the musical fray in the mid-00s with several guest appearances and one-off shows, and in 2012 embarked on a West Coast trek which included a high-profile appearance at Coachella.
A year later, the core Neutral Milk Hotel line-up, along with new recruit Jeremy Thal, headed out onto the road together for a number of tours before announcing a series of farewell gigs in 2015.
