The Lumineers Biography
Alongside the likes of Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters & Men and Imagine Dragons, The Lumineers’ heart-swelling blend of front-porch folk, classic pop and rousing Americana has been instrumental in the success of the current roots-rock revival. After moving from their hometown of Ramsey, New Jersey to New York, guitarist Wesley Schultz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites first began performing together under the name of Wesley Jeremiah in 2005. But frustrated with the lack of opportunities and high living costs, the pair then relocated to Denver, Colorado, where after posting an advert on Craigslist, they hooked up with cellist Neyla Pekarek. After selling The Lumineers tickets for a string of shows at basement club venue The Meadowlark, the trio attracted the attention of Onto Entertainment with a YouTube performance recorded in their small apartment. The Seattle-based management firm then paid for the group to record their debut album at Bear Creek Studios with Gossip producer Ryan Hadlock, which the band then took on the road with the sale of The Lumineers tickets for joint tours with the likes of indie-folk duo Milk Carton Kids and Illinois singer-songwriter Pokey LaFarge. Demand for The Lumineers tickets significantly increased after debut single “Ho Hey” was featured on the season one finale of The CW’s comedy drama Hart Of Dixie and hugely influential DJ John Richards started to play the track on KEXP-FM. And after passing up several major label offers to sign with Dualtone Records in 2012, the song eventually peaked at No.3 on the US Hot 100, sold two million copies and became both the year’s most played track on Spotify and the highest-charting independent label single in US Top 40 airplay history, while its self-titled parent album reached No.2 on the Billboard charts. Following the permanent recruitment of pianist Stelth Ulvang and bassist Ben Wahamaki, the group released The Lumineers tickets for their first major headline tour before earning two Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. In 2013, the quintet released second single, “Stubborn Love,” performed at various festivals across the globe including Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza and released The Lumineers tickets for a European tour and a second series of North American dates.
