A Few Good Reasons to Buy Toto Tickets on TicketIQ.com
Best known for their number one single, “Africa,” ever-changing California outfit Toto dominated the early 80s charts with a potent blend of keyboard-driven pop, adult contemporary and arena rock. Formed in 1977 by keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro, who had previously worked together as session musicians, the core line-up was completed shortly after when bassist David Hungate, guitarist Steve Lukather, keyboardist Steve Porcaro and frontman Bobby Kimball joined the fold. Their 1978 self-titled debut immediately launched them to fame, spawning a US Top 10 hit in the shape of “Hold The Line” and earning them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. 1980’s Hydra and 1981’s Turn Back consolidated their early success but it was 1982’s Toto IV that took their career to another level. Featuring the chart-topper “Africa,” the three-time Grammy winning single “Rosanna” and the Top 10 ballad “I Won’t Hold You Back,” the record sold millions of copies worldwide and established Toto as one of America’s leading rock acts. The band experienced the first of many personnel changes when Hungate left to be replaced by a third Porcaro brother, Mike, and Kimball was fired in favor of Angel’s Fergie Frederiksen. This new incarnation recorded one album together, 1984’s Isolation, before the latter also found himself surplus to requirements, with John Williams’ son Joseph taking his place for 1986’s Fahrenheit and 1988’s The Seventh One. Following the release of hits collection Past To Present, Lukather took over lead vocal duties in time for 1992’s Kingdom of Desire, but tragedy struck a year later when founding member Jeff Porcaro died suddenly aged just 38. The group initially thought about calling it a day but eventually regrouped with new drummer Simon Phillips and headed out on a 1993 summer tour before returning to the studio for 1995’s Tambu. Most of the original line-up then reconvened to promote 1998 outtakes collection Toto XX before Kimball rejoined permanently for the band’s first US tour in six years. 2002 covers album, Through The Looking Glass, was then followed by 2006’s Falling In Between, and an announcement of a split in 2008. However, just two years later, the group reunited for a European trek and in 2015, achieved their first Billboard 200 entry in 17 years with Toto XIV, and headed out on a North American tour with prog-rock giants Yes.
