Showcasing their prog-rock symphonies with elaborate pyrotechnics and laser displays, Trans-Siberian Orchestra are renowned for their ability to stage hugely ambitious and often breath-taking live shows. The permanent core of the band formed in the early 90s when Paul O’Neill, previously the manager of AC/DC & Joan Jett and frontman of Slowburn teamed up with keyboardist Robert Kinkel, and guitarists Jon Oliva and Al Pitrelli, the latter two of which he had worked with when producing Savatage. Inspired by the prog of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the hard rock of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin and the multiple lead vocalist line-up of The Temptations and The Four Tops, they released their debut album, Christmas Eve & Other Stories in 1996 and followed it up two years later with The Christmas Attic. Trans-Siberian Orchestra tickets then went on sale for their first ever live show, a charity gig for Blythsdale Children’s Hospital before the band released their first non-festive record, Beethoven’s Last Night, in 2000. In the same year, two touring groups were formed, TSO East & TSO West, to allow their Holiday shows, typically one half narrated rock opera, one half Greatest Hits set, to be performed across more venues, an act they have repeated ever since. A regular fixture on the live circuit throughout the decade, the band decided to donate at least $1 from each of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra tickets sold for every show to local charities, helping them to raise over $10m during the course of their career. The final instalment of their Christmas trilogy, The Lost Christmas Eve, arrived in 2004, and became their mainstream breakthrough, peaking at No.26 on the US charts. They then entered the Top 10 for the first time with 2009’s Night Castle, whilst their live reputation was bolstered when they were announced by Billboard as one of the Top 25 touring acts of the decade. In 2011, fans in Germany, England and the Netherlands got the chance to buy Trans-Siberian Orchestra tickets for the first time with the announcement of their first ever European tour. And whilst working on several productions including Broadway musical Romanov: When Kings Must Whisper and rock opera Gutter Ballet & The New York City Blues Express, the band reached No.9 with the Dreams Of Fireflies (On A Christmas Night) E.P.
