Usher Biography

One of the few artists to score number ones from five consecutive studio albums and over three consecutive decades, Usher is arguably the most successful male R&B artist of all time. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1978, he first began singing in his local church choir at the age of nine before moving to Atlanta, where managed by his mother, he appeared in short-lived outfit NuBeginnings and entered the TV talent show Star Search. Discovered by L.A. Reid, he signed to LaFace Records and after appearing on the Poetic Justice soundtrack, he released his self-titled debut album in 1994. Following his high school graduation, his 1997 sophomore album, My Way, spawned number ones in the US (“Nice & Slow”) and the UK (“You Make Me Wanna”) and after support slots with Puff Daddy, Mary J. Blige, and Janet Jackson, Usher tickets went on sale for his first series of headline shows. Usher then concentrated on his acting career, appearing in horror spoof The Faculty and rom-com She’s All That before returning to the music scene with 2001’s 8701 and two subsequent US chart-toppers, “U Got It Bad” and the Grammy-winning “U Remind Me.” But it was with 2004’s Confessions that he achieved his biggest success with sales of over 20 million and four number one singles including the Alicia Keys duet “My Boo,” leading to countless awards such as Billboard Artist of the Year. After being featured on hits by Lil Jon, R. Kelly, and Omarion and taking on the role of Billy Flynn in the Broadway musical Chicago, he released 2008’s Here I Stand and Usher tickets for a 15-date “One Night Stand” tour that was solely reserved for his female fans. Later that year, he signed Justin Bieber to his Raymond Braun Media Group company and in 2009, he appeared alongside Stevie Wonder and Shakira at the Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial and performed “Gone Too Soon” at the Michael Jackson memorial. 2010’s Raymond vs Raymond produced his eighth US No.1, “OMG,” a track which he later performed with will.i.am at the Super Bowl half-time show, whilst sales of Usher tickets for a tour of the same name grossed nearly $70m. In 2012, he scored a fourth straight chart-topping album with Looking 4 Myself and joined Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Shakira on the judging panel for the 2013 series of The Voice.
