Emerging as national powerhouse from the territorial era, WWE has long been the pinnacle of professional wrestling. WWE tickets have safely sat atop the wrestling industry for decades as the best selling tickets in sports entertainment. In an industry that was split between major companies in different “territories,” Vincent K. McMahon’s take over of the then World Wide Wrestling Federation from his father was the first step to establishing one dominant professional wrestling brand.
McMahon’s first set of business after taking over his father’s promotion was to hire Hulk Hogan and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. With Hogan as a crowd favorite and Piper as his foil, McMahon held the biggest main event of any wrestling promotion, making WWE tickets, then the WWF, the most demanded in the country. Additional signings of Andre the Giant, Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka allowed WWF to secure a national television deal. With new television shows being shown all around the country, WWE tickets quickly grew in popularity for its live events.
With popularity booming WWE embarked on a large gamble, the pay-per-view event WrestleMania in 1985. WrestleMania was billed as professional wrestling’s Super Bowl and featured celebrity appearances by Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper. The event was a success and added the interest of people who were not previously familiar with professional wrestling. The business continued to boom and hit its highest peak with WrestleMania III at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. WrestleMania III set an attendance record with 93,173 WWE tickets sold.
The boom continued through the 80’s through 1993 when WWF debuted a weekly cable program, Monday Night Raw. WWE tickets for Raw and other other events were selling well until competitor promotion World Championship Wrestling debuted their own show, Monday Nitro, starting what is known as the Monday Night Wars.
Both companies went back and forth winning in ratings until about 1996 when WCW unveiled the nWo, a revolutionary group of wrestlers led by Hulk Hogan. WWF had to cut prices throughout 1997 to stay competitive. WWE tickets for the Royal Rumble in 1997 were as low as $10 and prices for WrestleMania 13 were as low as $25. WrestleMania 13 did not sell out in Chicago, the only WrestleMania to not do so.
WWF grabbed the upper hand back in late 1997 with the launch of the “Attitude Era,” a shift into more mature action and storylines. The Attitude Era hit its high for WrestleMania X-7 in 2001 in the Astrodome, selling 67,925 WWE tickets for what is considered the best wrestling pay-per-view event ever. Later in 2001, WWF completed the dominance for good by purchasing WCW.
Another company shift occurred in 2002, when World Wrestling Federation was changed to World Wrestling Entertainment after a legal battle with the World Wildlife Fund. The name changed, but WWE tickets continued to sell well through the 2000s. Since then WWE has become TV-PG, shying away from the controversial Attitude Era.
WWE tickets continue to be some of the highest selling live event tickets in the entertainment industry. With monthly pay-per-views and almost daily live events, there are no shortage of WWE tickets for wrestling fans everywhere.
