Jessie J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish on March 27, 1988 in London, England. Cornish attended Mayfield High School and was recognized for her vocal prowess in her teen years, joining the National Youth Music Theatre and appearing in the program’s 2002 rendition of The Late Sleepers. While she was initially signed to the now-defunct Gut Records, she first found success as a songwriter, writing popular songs for artists such as Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus.
She was involved in a pop group called Soul Deep, though quickly resigned after believing that the group would ultimately fail to find success. Jessie J would officially sign with Lava Records and began recording her first solo studio album in 2005. The result was 2011’s Who You Are, which spawned the hit singles “Do It Like A Dude” and “Price Tag”, the latter peaking at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year.
Jessi J would release her sophomore studio effort Alive in 2013. She would continue to ascend the charts, spending a total of 12 weeks inside the Billboard Top 40 and pushing 40,000 copies in the UK alone in its first week of sales. It would be her third album, 2014’s Sweet Talker, that would catapult into her into international fame.
The record includes the hit song “Bang Bang”, which also features pop superstars Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. “Burnin’ Up”, the album’s second single, also features star help from rapper 2 Chainz. Sweet Talker debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2014 and sold 25,000 copies in its first week. It is her highest-charting album in the U.S. to date, though spent the least amount of time inside the Top 40 in her native U.K.
She has embarked on four headlining tours, including her latest in support of Sweet Talker. Special guests along the Sweet Talker World Tour include DJ Charlesy, Luke James, Jupiter Project and Timomatic.
