The New York Mets are one of the most well known and beloved teams in the history of baseball. The team was founded and introduced to the National League in 1961. Formerly known as The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc., their name was shortened to the Mets by former club owner Joan Payson due to it's fan appeal and historical background, as well as its relevance to the metropolitan area. Before the Mets' first official home stadium was completed, they played at the Polo Grounds from 1962-1963. In 1964, the team moved to their own stadium. William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, or simply called Shea Stadium for short, opened in April of 1964. Located in the borough of Queens, Shea Stadium saw the sale of many Mets tickets before it closed after the team's final game there in September of 2008. In 2009 the Mets moved into their current stadium, Citi Field. The team's new stadium is located in Flushing Meadows, adjacent to where Shea Stadium used to stand. Mets tickets were sold there for the first time in April of 2009. Citi Field will also be host to the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; this will be the second time the Mets have hosted the game since the opening of Shea Stadium in 1964. The Mets held the New York baseball attendance record for 29 years. The team broke the 1948 attendance record held by the New York Yankees in 1970. That year, close to 2.7 million Mets tickets were sold. They continued to surpass this achievment, breaking their own record five times up until 1999.
