New York Red Bulls History
The Red Bulls have been part of the MLS since the leagues inception in 1996, making them one
of the oldest teams in the league. Although being a soccer franchise for only a short time, they
have not always sold New York Red Bulls tickets as the team has undergone numerous name
changes. Originally the team was called the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, then in 1998
changed to simply the MetroStars, and finally in 2008 the team was sold to Red Bull and thus
began the era of selling New York Red Bulls tickets.
The time the Red Bulls have been in the MLS has been a disappointing one as they are the
only team out of the 10 original charter clubs to have never won an MLS trophy. This includes
the MLS Cup, U.S. Open, and the Supporters’ Shield. Although the club has enjoyed minimal
success over the years, they have still maintained a positive fan base as they routinely are a
top five team in the league when it comes to attendance which can be attributed to the 25,000
New York Red Bulls tickets they can sell each home game at Red Bull Arena.
When Red Bull purchased the MetroStars in 2006 they decided to do a complete franchise
makeover as they changed the name, colors, and logo of the squad and bought out AEG’s $100
million share in the construction of the new stadium so they would have total command over
the selling of New York Red Bulls tickets.
Red Bull Arena and the Fans
Red Bull Arena is where they currently sell New York Red Bulls tickets and has been that way
since the stadium was completed in 2010 after four years of construction. A big reason for
the delay in the opening of the stadium was due to the fact that after Red Bull purchased the
franchise and bought out AEG’s stake in the stadium, the stadium was redesigned by Red Bull
architects who opted out of AEG’s plan to have a performance stage in the stadium so it could
be used for more than to just sell New York Red Bulls tickets.
The construction of Red Bull Arena came to a total cost $200 million, a large number for United
States soccer stadiums. The reasons for the stadiums extravagant cost is attributed to some of
the fan friendly amenities that the franchise hoped would increase the sale of New York Red
Bulls tickets. Among these amenities is the translucent roof that covers the seating area of the
fans protecting them from the elements, but allows for the elements such as rain to fall on the
pitch where the players are.
Along with the new stadium in 2010 also came aggressive moves by ownership to improve the
team competition wise and to hopefully garner more fan interest and sell more New York Red
Bulls tickets. The most high profile signing in the 2010 offseason came when the team signed
French star Thierry Henry and new head coach Hans Backe who led the team to 51 season
points and a successful first season at Red Bull Arena.
