BYU Cougars News

10-20-14: The BYU Cougars hosted the Nevada Wolf Pack this week at home in Lavell Edwards Stadium as BYU looked to snap a two game losing streak. BYU came into the game with a 4-2 record on the season while Nevada boasted a 3-3 record with a 1-2 record in the MW Conference. BYU and Nevada had an uneventful first quarter but the fans were entertained by a high scoring second quarter from both teams. All in all these two teams combined for five scoring drives including four touchdowns to end the high on a high note as BYU went into the half leading Nevada by the score of 28-13. Nevada inched closer with a touchdown drive in the third quarter setting up a potentially exciting fourth quarter. The last quarter was only exciting if you were a Nevada fan as the Wolf Pack rattled off three scoring touchdowns in the first ten minutes of the quarter to take a commanding 42-28 lead over the Cougars. BYU’s quarterback Christian Stewart added an eight yard touchdown pass Keanu Nelson to inch closer to a respectable 42-35 but that was as close as they would get as Nevada won this game by that same 42-35 score. BYU dropped their third straight game to lower their record to 4-3 while Nevada improved their season record to 4-3 overall. Get your BYU tickets for the next Cougars game as the team travels to Boise State on Friday, October 24 to take on the Broncos on the road in Bronco Stadium. The game will be played at 9:00 pm ET and can be seen on ESPN.

10-15-14: The BYU Cougars are fresh off their first loss of the season and fresh off traveling to UCF to take on the Knights in Bright House Networks Stadium in a Thursday night college football game. BYU dropped their record to 4-1 with their loss last week while UCF was riding a two game winning streak to even their record at 2-2. BYU was a huge favorite coming into the contest but UCF jumped all over the Cougars early as the Knights put up two first quarter scoring drives to take a 10-0 lead. BYU finally got on the board with a field goal of their own at the 5:12 mark to inch within 10-3 and would head into halftime trailing by that same score. BYU came out of the gates in the second half on fire in the second half and put up three quick touchdown drives all off the arm of Cougars quarterback Christian Stewart to take a 24-10 lead. UCF would answer with a touchdown of their own late in the third quarter as the Knights inched closer at 24-17 setting up a dramatic fourth quarter. UCF scored quickly in the fourth quarter to tie the game and eventually put the game into overtime. UCF overcame four turnovers in the game and won the game by the score of 31-24 when QB Justin Holman threw a four yard touchdown pass to William Stanback to cap off a five play 25 yard drive. UCF has now won three games in a row while BYU has dropped their second straight game this season. Be sure to get your BYU tickets for the next Cougars game next Saturday as the team hosts the Nevada Wolf Pack at home in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be played at 10:15 pm ET and can be seen on ESPN 2.

10-6-14: The #18 BYU Cougars hosted the Utah State Aggies this week in a Friday college football matchup at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU went into the game with a 4-0 record and put their perfect season aspirations up against a 2-2 Aggies team. BYU came out quickly scoring a touchdown at the 13:44 mark but then struggled for the rest of the first half only scoring another touchdown in the second quarter. Late in the first quarter Utah State’s quarterback Darell Garretson threw a seven yard touchdown pass to Devonte Robinson to tie the game. Trailing at the halfway point in the second quarter Utah State put the first of three touchdowns into the end zone in less than four minutes to lead 28-14 at the half. Utah State’s defense led to the big second quarter and led to a long day for the Cougars offense. BYU turned the ball over five times in the game including a turnover on downs, a forced fumble, and three interceptions by Christian Stewart. Stewart was benched in favor of his backup Taysom Hill and Hill looked impressive going 8/11 with 99 yards and a touchdown but it was too little too late for BYU. Utah State held onto the ball for 37:51 of the game and forced turnover after turnover which led to the Aggies 35-20 victory over BYU. BYU’s perfect season is over as their record dropped to 4-1 while Utah State improved their record to 3-2 on the season. Be sure to grab some BYU tickets for the next Cougars game next Thursday as they take on the UCF Knights on the road in Florida. The game will be played at 7:30 pm ET and can be seen on ESPN.

10-1-14: The #20 BYU Cougars will look to keep their perfect season going next week when they host the Utah State Aggies at home in LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU is 4-0 on the young season and will face off with the 2-2 Utah State football team. Both teams are off this week so both the Cougars and the Aggies should be well rested and prepared for their matchup. If the stats tell the story Utah State will have trouble stopping the BYU running game and scoring points against that Cougars defense. BYU currently ranks 31st in the nation in rushing while averaging 230.3 rushing yards per game. That aforementioned Cougar defense is only allowing 18.8 points per game which is the 25th best mark in all of College Football this season. If the Aggies stand any chance in this game they will have to stop BYU quarterback Taysom Hill. Hill obviously leads the team in passing with 876 passing yards and six touchdowns on 80 completions and 121 attempts. Hill also leads the Cougars rushing game with 428 rushing yards on 79 attempts with seven touchdowns. If the Aggies can stop Hill they can stop a big chunk of the Cougars offense that has been able to outscore opponents and keep the opposing team off the field for much of the 2014 College Football season. BYU currently leads the FBS Independents Conference with their 4-0 record and will look to keep their edge on Notre Dame, Army, and Navy next week. Get your BYU tickets for the next Cougars game as the team takes a week and heads home to face off with the Utah State Aggies. The game will be played on Friday, October 3 on ESPN at 10:15 pm ET.

9-22-14: The BYU Cougars hosted the Virginia Cavaliers this week at home in LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU put their perfect 3-0 record on this contest against Virginia’s 2-1 record in the early season so something had to give here. Virginia played BYU tough all game long but ultimately the Cougars were able to edge the Cavaliers by the score of 41-33 to improve their record to 4-0 on the season. These two teams traded touchdowns for much of the game but the difference came in the third quarter when the Cougars held the Cavaliers scoreless while putting the ball in the end zone twice to take the lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. BYU also won the special teams game this evening as the team sealed the victory with a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Adam Hine. Virginia was also hurt by two turnovers in the game, one fumble and one interception, while BYU protected the ball and did not turn the ball over in their fourth win. The good news is you have an extra week to prepare and plan if you want to see the BYU Cougars live in two weeks. Get your BYU tickets now as the team will host the Utah State Aggies on October 7 at home in LaVell Edwards Stadium.

9-16-14: The ranked BYU Cougars played the Houston Cougars this week in a Thursday night game at LaVell Edwards Stadium that was showcased on ESPN. BYU went into the game looking to stay undefeated and Houston went into the game looking for their second victory of the season but BYU was too much for Houston as they fell to BYU 33-25. BYU started the game by forcing a safety early in the first quarter and continued to pour it on as the team led 16-0 after the first quarter. BYU didn’t stop at 16-0 as the score was 23-0 before Houston got on the board. Houston would put up two touchdowns in the second quarter and a field goal with a failed PAT attempt thrown in there for good measure and trailed 23-15 at the half. BYU would put it away with a field goal in the third and a touchdown early in the fourth to take a commanding 33-15 lead. The BYU defense would allow two more field goals in the game to end it 33-25 but this game was not as close as the final score would suggest. BYU had a pair of 100+ yard rushers in the game when Taysom Hill rushed for 160 yards and Jamaal Williams rushed for 139 yards as the team controlled the clock for much of the game. The Cougars get a few extra days off to prepare for their next game against the Virginia Cavaliers next Saturday so you have plenty of time to get your BYU tickets for the game. The game will be seen on television on ESPN at 3:30 pm ET.

9-8-14: The BYU Cougars took on the Texas Longhorns this week on the road in Texas in a primetime game on Fox Sports 1. BYU sent a statement to the rest of the country with a big 41-7 victory over the Longhorns in a game that the Cougars dominated from whistle to whistle. BYU’s defense held the Texas offense down all game long and held the opposition scoreless through the first half. The only score that the Cougars defense allowed was a 3rd quarter touchdown pass with 0:39 left by QB Tyrone Swoopes. The Cougar defense also forced three fumbles and an interception in the game to seal the deal. BYU’s offense was dominant as the Cougars put up 429 yards of total offense including 181 in the air and 248 on the ground. BYU controlled the ground game and controlled the clock with over 34 minutes of possession time with their 59 rushing attempts on the game. BYU has a two headed monster attack in the back field with Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams both nearing the century mark in rushing yards. Hill had 24 carriers and gained 99 rushing yards while Williams carried the ball 19 times and rushed for 89 yards on the day.
