The Louisiana State University Tigers are a member of the Southeastern Conference with 21 participating varsity teams. LSU consistently puts winning programs on the field every year and has produced 47 total team national championships, which ranks fifth all-time in the NCAA. LSU baseball is one of the reasons why, having won six total national championships, all since 1991. The Tigers have 16 College World Series appearances and 16 SEC championships. Legendary baseball coach Skip Bertman won the first five championships at LSU as he coached from 1984 to 2001, winning 870 games and is considered to be one of the top two greatest college baseball coaches of all-time. Current head coach Paul Mainieri took over for the program in 2007, winning LSU’s most recent championship in 2009. The LSU Tigers basketball team has appeared in 21 NCAA tournaments with nine Sweet Sixteen visits, six Elite Eight’s and four Final Four’s. LSU claims a national championship in 1935 for winning the American Legion Bowl and is the only NCAA institution to claim such a title. The LSU Tigers have produced some legendary players including two national player of the years: Peter Maravich and Shaquille O’Neal. Both are considered to be among the very best players the sport has ever seen. While the program still hasn’t reached the level of success of the 70’s and 80’s, LSU made a Final Four appearance in 2006, eventually dropping to the UCLA Bruins in the national semifinal. The 2005-06 team is still considered one of the most successful teams in the history of the program. The LSU Tigers football team is considered one of the best programs in the NCAA, having claimed three national championships. The two most recent championships occurred in 2003 and 2007. The LSU Tigers became the first two-loss team to play for and win the national championship in 2007 and they were the first team to win two BCS titles. In addition to their three claimed national titles, LSU has five other unclaimed national titles. The Tigers rank 11th all-time in college football victories with over 760 wins. Current head coach Les Miles is about to begin his 11th year as head coach of the Tigers, posting a 103-28 record. Miles has led the Tigers to 10 straight bowl games at LSU, winning six.

5-29-15: Widely considered one of the nation's top recruits, McDonald's All-American Ben Simmons will begin his college career with LSU during the 2015-16 NCAA season. The basketball phenom approved a lucrative season ticket marketing campaign through LSU, who will use his image to promote the upcoming season. The school is distributing billboards, print, online and social media advertising already, using the slogan "He's coming" as its initial advertisement.
