Penn State News
9-15-14: It sure wasn’t pretty, but Christian Hackenberg and Penn State continue to find ways to win. Their 13-10 win over Rutgers Saturday places Penn State atop the Big Ten East division standings. Bill Belton scored on a 5-yard run with 1:13 to play as Penn State rallied from a 10-point deficit. Hackenberg was 25 of 44 for 309 yards, but it was the defense that should be lauded for their effort Saturday. Penn State picked off QB Gary Nova five times and limited the Rutgers offense in the second half. Penn State will return home to State College this weekend to face UMass.
9-9-14: It wasn’t pretty for James Franklin’s Nittany Lions squad, but they found a way to beat Akron 21-3 in their home opener this past weekend. Despite the victory, the offense struggled mightily, especially quarterback Christian Hackenberg. He threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns, but made some poor decisions and tossed two red zone interceptions. On the other side of the ball, the Penn State defense looked strong. The Nittany Lions will travel to New Jersey this weekend to take on Rutgers in their first Big Ten conference game of the year.
9-4-14: The Nittany Lions needed every second of its trip to the Emerald Isle to beat UCF last weekend. They needed a last second 36-yard field goal from Sam Ficken to beat the Knights in James Frankin’s debut as head coach. Ficken made four other field goals in the game as well. The Penn State offense was humming last week. The Nittany Lions got a school-record 454 passing yards and a touchdown on 32-of-47 passing from Christian Hackenberg. Hackenberg, who also threw two interceptions, became the first Penn State quarterback ever to top the 400-yard mark. The Lions play host to Akron this weekend in their home opener.
