TCU News

12-8-14: The #3 TCU Horned Frogs traveled back home for their final regular season game of the year to play host to the Iowa State Cyclones. This Big 12 matchup took place inside TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium with TCU’s playoff hopes hinging on the contest. TCU had won six straight games coming into the contest which improved their record to 10-1 and their Big 12 record to 7-1. Iowa State had lost five games in a row entering the contest which left their record at 2-9 and 0-8 in the conference leaving the Cyclones with nothing to play for this week. TCU needs a victory to clinch their own spot in the first College Football playoff while Iowa State looks to get their first conference victory and look to play spoiler in their final game of the season.

TCU needed to win this game and win this game in a big way to convince the committee that the team deserved to be in the College Football Playoff. TCU did just that as the team ran up the score a bit while putting up 722 yards of total offense over an overmatched Cyclones defense. Iowa State tried to play the spoiler in the contest and win their first Big 12 game of the season but the offense was able to muster just 236 yards of total offense in the contest. TCU’s Trevone Boykin finished the game with 460 yards passing, a receiving touchdown and four touchdowns passing before leaving the game after one drive in the fourth quarter. Boykin handed the ball to Bram Kohlhausen who marched down the field before the TCU head coach decided to kneel down on the ball rather than run up the score further showing class and respect for Iowa State. Sam B. Richardson had trouble moving the ball all day long against the TCU defense on the road and finished with just 152 yards passing with an interception and -14 yards rushing on four attempts. Sam E. Richardson intercepted a Boykin touchdown pass in the end zone to highlight the Cyclones defensive day in a 55-3 loss to the Horned Frogs. TCU forced 10 punts, caught two interceptions and allowed just a field goal in a total victory for the Horned Frogs.

TCU finished their season with an 11-1 record and an 8-1 conference record which makes the team bowl eligible and gave the Horned Frogs a share of the Big 12 Championship. Congratulations to TCU on the championship but this is not likely the last we see from this team as the Horned Frogs are likely to head to the inaugural College Football playoff. Iowa State finished with a 2-10 and a 0-9 Big 12 record which makes the team ineligible for a bowl game while falling out of contention for the Big 12 Conference Championship.

11-9-14: The #6 TCU Horned Frogs hosted #7 Kansas State Wildcats this week at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium in a huge Big 12 matchup for both schools. In the contest are a couple of highly ranked teams vying for the Big 12 Championship in a possible preview of the championship game in December. TCU came into the game fresh off their biggest test of the season as the Horned Frogs narrowly avoided an upset at the hands of West Virginia that improved their overall record to 7-1 and 4-1 in the conference. Kansas State has won five games in a row and came into the contest sporting a 7-1 record with a perfect 5-0 Big 12 conference record this season. TCU came out with their guns blazing offensively as the team put up two quick touchdowns in the first quarter before Kansas State knew what was coming at them. The Wildcats did add their own touchdown pass to crawl back into the game before the defenses took over in the second quarter. TCU did manage to add a late field goal with just 0:54 left in the half to take a 17-7 lead with them into halftime. TCU got the ball out of halftime and continued to pull away from Kansas State with a pair of touchdowns early in the third quarter before really piling on in the fourth quarter. TCU QB Trevone Boykin took over late in the game with not only his legs but his arm as the Horned Frogs easily went on to beat Kansas State by the score of 41-20. TCU improved their record to 8-1 and 5-1 in the Big 12 with the victory while Kansas State dropped their record to 7-2 and 5-1 in the conference this season with the loss. Get your TCU tickets for next week’s contest as the Horned Frogs travel to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks in Memorial Stadium. The game will be played at 3:00 pm ET and can be seen on television on Fox Sports 1.

-3-14: The #10 ranked TCU Horned Frogs traveled to West Virginia to take on the #20 ranked Mountaineers on the road in Milan Puskar Stadium in a Big 12 matchup. TCU embarrassed Texas Tech last week for their second straight victory to improve their overall record to 6-1 and 3-1 in the Big 12 while West Virginia have won four games in a row to improve their record to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in the conference in 2014. This was a tough game for the usually high powered TCU offense as West Virginia played tough defense for 60 minutes in this contest. West Virginia came out pumping on all cylinders as the Mountaineers put up the first 13 points of the game while keeping the Horned Frogs off the board until the 1:44 mark in the first quarter. West Virginia continued to keep TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin and running back B.J. Catalon off the board as the Mountaineers took a 31-21 lead with them into the fourth quarter before the Horned Frogs mounted a comeback attempt. The aforementioned Catalon ran in a six yard touchdown pass with just under eight minutes left to go in the contest to bring TCU back within 31-28. TCU’s defense stopped West Virginia and with 2:07 left in the contest the offense was back on the field for the final time of the game. TCU marched down the field for 56 yards on seven plays setting up a 37 field goal attempt by TCU’s kicker Jaden Oberkrom. Oberkrom split the uprights as TCU survived a close game as the Horned Frogs won the contest by the score of 31-30 as the field goal was good as time expired. TCU improved their record to 7-1 and 4-1 in the Big-12 while West Virginia dropped their record to 6-3 and 4-2 in the conference while also likely dropping out of the Top 25 rankings. Get your TCU tickets for next Saturday’s game when the Horned Frogs host the #9 Kansas State Wildcats at home in the Carrier Dome. The game time and television schedule has to be determined at this time.

10-27-14: The #10 ranked TCU Horned Frogs hosted the Texas Tech Red Raiders this week at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium in a Big 12 matchup for both teams. TCU came into the contest fresh off a victory over Oklahoma State that improved their record to 5-1 and 2-1 in the Big 12 while Texas Tech was fresh off a victory over Kansas that improved their record to 3-4 and 1-3 in the conference. TCU came into the contest with the highest scoring offense in the nation averaging a whopping 50.4 points per game and surprisingly improved on that in this contest. After 60 minutes the Horned Frogs offense managed 82 points and 785 yards of total offense in a game that Texas Tech never had a chance in. TCU’s lowest inning scoring output was 13 points and the team managed a whopping 31 points in the third quarter while Texas Tech managed just 10 points after the first quarter. With the win TCU improved their overall record to 6-1 and improved their Big 12 record to 3-1 on the season while Texas Tech dropped their own record to 3-5 and 1-4 in the conference this season. Get your TCU tickets for the next Horned Frogs game as the team travels to West Virginia to take on the #22 ranked Mountaineers next Saturday on the road in Milan Puskar Stadium. The game time and television schedule has yet to be determined.

10-20-14: The #12 ranked TCU Horned Frogs hosted the #15 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys this week at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium in a Big 12 matchup for both teams. TCU came into the contest with a 4-1 record and a 1-1 conference record while Oklahoma State boasted a 5-1 record with a perfect 3-0 record in the Big 12 this season. In surprising fashion TCU had their way with Oklahoma State in this contest. TCU’s offense put up three quick scoring drives in the first quarter and another in the second quarter while the Horned Frogs defense held the Cowboys to three first half field goals as the game went into halftime with TCU leading Oklahoma State by the score of 28-9. TCU kept up their dominance in the third quarter putting the ball in the end zone two more times while keeping Oklahoma State off the board after the 7:36 mark in the second quarter to win the contest by the score of 42-9. TCU had 676 yards of total offense in this game as they improved their record to 5-1 and 2-1 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma State saw their record drop to 5-2 and 3-1 in the conference this season. Get your TCU tickets for the next Horned Frogs game as the team travels home next Saturday to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium. The game will be played at 3:30 pm ET and can be seen on FOX.

10-15-14: The #9 ranked TCU Horned Frogs traveled this week to take on the #5 ranked Baylor Bears on the road in McLane Stadium. TCU came into the contest sporting a perfect 4-0 record with a 1-0 conference record in the Big 12 while Baylor had a similar 5-0 record with a 2-0 Big 12 record. If you were a fan of offensive football this was the game for you to watch as these two teams combined for a staggering 119 points in the contest. TCU had 485 total yards of offense including a staggering 346 yards in the air while the Baylor gained 782 yards of total offense including 510 in the air. While it seemed like there was no defense to be found in this contest TCU still forced five turnovers including two turnovers on downs, one fumble, and two interceptions while holding Baylor to just 5-18 on third downs. TCU was 7-20 on third down in the contest and 1-3 on fourth down and played close to mistake free football in the contest. While all these stats you would think that Baylor would have fallen to TCU in the contest and even trailed in the fourth quarter at one point by the score of 58-37 before the Bears offense took over and went off. In the final 11 minutes of the contest Baylor put the ball into the end zone three times including two Bryce Petty touchdown passes to tie the game at 58-58 with less than five minutes in the contest. The contest went down to the final minutes and Baylor had the ball and subsequently marched down the field and kicked a game winning field goal as time expired to win this shootout 61-58 over TCU completing a huge comeback. Baylor improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the Big 12 with the victory while TCU dropped to 4-1 with a 1-1 conference record with the tough defeat. Be sure to get your TCU tickets for the next Horned Frogs game next Saturday as the team hosts the #16 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys at home in Amon G. Carter in BB&T Field. The game will be played at 4:00 pm ET and can be seen on Fox Sports 1.

10-6-14: The #25 ranked TCU Horned Frogs hosted a tough opponent this week when the #4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners came to town to play in Amon G. Carter Stadium. Both teams came into the contest with a perfect record, 3-0 for the Horned Frogs and 4-0 for the Sooners, and neither team has played a Big 12 conference game before today. If you were a fan of offense this was the game for you, especially in the first quarter, as both teams were able to put the ball in the end zone twice as the first quarter ended with a 14-14 tie game. The second quarter was the same story for these two teams as they traded a touchdown and a field goal each to head into halftime with the score knotted at 24-24. The third quarter was a new story but the same old story as both teams scored a single touchdown putting the score at 31-31 heading into the fourth quarter. TCU started the fourth off with a touchdown interception return for 41 yards by Paul Dawson but the PAT was blocked by the Sooners defense. Oklahoma converted the defense PAT to bring the score to 37-33 but the TCU defense would take over for the rest of the game. TCU kept the Sooners off the board for the rest of the game and won the game by that same 37-33 score. Oklahoma was one of four of the Top 6 teams in the nation to lose over the weekend while TCU improved their record to 4-0 while Oklahoma dropped their record to 4-1. Be sure to grab some TCU tickets for the next Horned Frogs game next Saturday as they take on the Baylor Bears on the road in Floyd Casey Stadium. The game will be played at 3:30 pm ET and can be seen on ABC and ESPN2.

10-1-14: The TCU Horned Frogs had a week off before heading out on the road this week to face off with the SMU Mustangs in Gerald J. Ford Stadium. TCU has played two games before this game and are a perfect 2-0 while SMU went into the game looking for their first win of the season as the Mustangs sat at 0-3 heading into the game. TCU being the undefeated team and SMU looking for their first win meant that this game went exactly as you would have expected it. SMU failed to score at all in the contest as the Horned Frogs defense shut out the Mustangs in the game. The TCU offense put up an impressive 56 points during the game on eight touchdowns, five in the air and three on the ground, to win the game by the score of 56-0. TCU put up a staggering 614 yards of total offense and held SMU to just 245 yards in a game that the Horned Frogs dominated from whistle to whistle. SMU turned the ball over three times including two lost fumbles and an interception while TCU played mistake free football for 60 minutes on Saturday. TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin had a game of it as he carved up the SMU defense with four touchdowns in the air on 280 yards and two more with his legs as he ran for 62 yards accounting for six touchdowns by himself on the day. TCU currently sits at 3-0 on the season after the victory while SMU falls to 0-4 and continues to search for that first win of the season. Get your TCU tickets for the Horned Frogs game next Saturday against the #4 Oklahoma Sooners at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium. The game will be played at 3:30 pm ET and can be seen on FOX.

9-22-14: The TCU Horned Frogs are fresh off a big win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers and will get a week of rest before traveling to take on the SMU Mustangs in Gerald J. Ford Stadium. TCU will use the game with the Mustangs as a primer before facing off with the fourth best team in the nation in Oklahoma to start the October schedule. TCU is 2-0 on the young season and is only one of three undefeated teams in the conference including #4 Oklahoma and #7 Baylor. SMU should have problems moving the football and scoring points against the Horned Frog defense as the team is sixth best in the nation in points allowed with just 10.5 points allowed per game. The TCU passing game led by Trevone Boykin and his 578 passing yards and four touch downs is the 30th best passing attack in all of the nation this season while the rushing attack led by Boykin as well is good for 52nd best in the nation. Get your TCU tickets for next week’s game as the Horned Frogs travel to take on the SMU Mustangs. The game will be played at 12:00 pm ET and can be seen on the CBS Sports Network.

9-16-14: The TCU Horned Frogs played their second game of the young college football season this week when they hosted the Minnesota Golden Gophers at home in Amon G. Carter Stadium. TCU handed Minnesota their first loss of the early season as the Horned Frogs won the game by the score of 30-7. TCU’s defense was in total control of this contest and did not allow the Golden Gophers to score until the 10:56 mark in the fourth quarter. Minnesota was held to 268 yards of total offense by the TCU defense while the TCU offense put up 427 yards of total offense in the contest. The Horned Frog defense also forced five turnovers in the game including three interceptions and two forced fumbles setting the tone for the contest. Minnesota was forced to punt the ball eight times and was forced to go for it on fourth down twice during the game, converting both attempts, as the Golden Gophers simply could not get their offensive game going this afternoon at TCU. The good news is you have an extra week to get your TCU tickets as the team has a week off next week to prepare for a road game against the SMU Mustangs in Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

9-8-14: The TCU Horned Frogs are off this week as they have extra time to prepare for their game with the Minnesota Golden Gophers next Saturday. In TCU’s first game the team beat up on the Samford Bulldogs by the score of 48-14 in a game that the Horned Frogs totally dominated from whistle to whistle. TCU threw for 355 yards in the game and rushed for another 200 yards in the offensive onslaught. Minnesota will not be as easy to run over next week as the team is fresh off convincing victories over Eastern Illinois and Middle Tennessee. Be sure to grab your tickets for this game as the two teams play at 4:00 pm ET on Fox Sports 1 as the Big 12 and the Big Ten square off in an early season contest.
