Texas Longhorns News
10-15-14: Texas is 2-4 and off to its worst start since going 1-9 in 1956. They came up just short Saturday to Oklahoma 31-26. QB Tyrone Swoopes, who was 27 of 44 passing for 334 yards, scored on a 12-yard run with under 5 minutes left. Charlie Strong has had a tough go in his first season in Austin. The Longhorns host Iowa State this weekend.
10-6-14: The Longhorns are off to their worst start since 1993. With Saturday’s 28-7 loss against Baylor, Texas has now lost nine in a row at home to ranked opponents. The Longhorns have been outscored 69-14 in two home games this season. The Texas defense held Baylor to 390 total yards. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes had three turnovers, including a fumble. Texas will play rival Oklahoma Saturday in Dallas.
10-1-14: Longhorn quarterback Tyrone Swoopes passed for one touchdown and ran for another and the Texas defense picked off four Kansas passes, leading the Longhorns to a 23-0 win Saturday in their Big 12 opener. Swoopes was 19 for 34 for 218 yards and two TDs. Texas has now beaten Kansas for the 12th straight time. The Longhorns will host AP No. 7 Baylor this week in Austin.
9-22-14: Coming off a bye this week, the Longhorns will play a lowly Kansas team. For the Horns to reach a bowl game this season, they will have to treat this game like a must-win. It's been a tough start to the Charlie Strong era. Texas is 1-2 on the year and were humiliated by BYU 41-7 at home. They then lost a late lead in a 20-17 defeat at the hands of UCLA. In two weeks, they have back-to-back games against No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 7 Baylor.
9-15-14: Playing UCLA three hours north of Austin in Arlington, the Texas Longhorns had upset on their mind. Unfortunately, their upset bid fell short as they lost to the Bruins 20-17. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns in his second start for the concussion-ridden David Ash. The Longhorn defense continues to be a problem as UCLA thrashed Charlie Strong’s squad for 443 yards. Texas will look to get back into win column this weekend as they travel to Kansas to take on an awful Jayhawk team.
9-9-14: Oh man what is ugly for Charlie Strong’s Texas Longhorns this past weekend. BYU and QB Tayson Hill racked up 429 total yards in their 41-7 defeat of Texas this past Saturday night. Texas avoided its first home shutout since 1976 when QB Tyrone Swoopes hit John Harris for a touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the third quarter. Swoopes finished the game 20-for-31 for 176 yards and one interception. BYU rolled up 550 yards rushing in a win over Texas last season. The Longhorns will be in for another test this Saturday as they play UCLA in Arlington, TX.
9-4-14: Charlie Strong’s first game as head coach of the Longhorns was a rousing success as Texas beat North Texas 38-7. However, the game did come at a price: Quarterback David Ash suffered a head injury and will miss Texas’ next game against BYU because of concussion-related symptoms. Ash threw for 190 yards and a touchdown last weekend, which was plenty enough when combined with Malcolm Brown's two rushing TDs. Texas is set to go with sophomore Tyrone Swoopes against the Cougars next this Saturday.
