Located in Pullman, Washington, the Washington State Cougars are collegiate athletic program that represents Washington State University. Washington State’s intercollegiate program, which is a member of the Pacific 12 Conference, has seven men’s and 10 women’s teams. Men’s teams include football, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, and track & field. Women’s teams include basketball, cross-country, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Washington State’s biggest rival is the University of Washington. These two schools vie for the Apple Cup during their annual football game. Rivalries also exist between Washington State and other Pac-12 teams located in the northwest. The football competition between these schools is very intense; Washington State holds a 47-44-3 advantage over Oregon State and trail Oregon 38-42-7. Washington State’ closest geographic rival is the University of Idaho. Coined the “Battle of the Palouse,” Washington State has dominated this football rivalry, boasting an impressive 71-18-3 advantage.

Washington State has won just two team national championships; men’s track and field (1977) and boxing (1937). Washington State’s football program is known for its ‘Air Raid’ offense, which was developed and coined by current head coach, Mike Leach. Under Leach, Washington State boasts a lackluster 12-25 record, but its quarterbacks post gaudy statistics. Washington State has only earned one bowl appearance in the last ten years, losing to Colorado State Rams in the 2013 New Mexico Bowl, 48-45. Washington State’s men’s basketball program has achieved some recent success. During the 2008 season, Washington State qualified for the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Washington State battled North Carolina for 20 minutes, but was unable to keep pace during the second half, losing 68-47. Washington State has engaged in a long-time rivalry against Gonzaga, which dates back to 1907. Washington State leads the all-time series, 98-50, despite Gonzaga’s strong recent play.

Washington State’s official mascot is “Butch T. Cougar.” Butch roams the sidelines during basketball and football games and tosses t-shirts into the stands. Washington State is also known for its “Cougar Cannon”, which is fired after every touchdown. Washington State’s ROTC department fires a blank round from a “Pack-75” 75mm Towed Howitzer. The official colors of Washington State are crimson and gray.

Washington State News

6-3-15: The Washington State Cougars men's basketball team led a forgettable campaign during the 2014-15 NCAA season, going a dismal 3-9 and 2-7 in conference play. The team will look to the upcoming season to try to right the ship, though games against formidable opponents like Oregon and Arizona will likely keep them at bay in 2015-16.
