Best-known for his global hit, “Alors on Danse” and retro-kitsch fashion sense, Belgian singer, rapper and songwriter Stromae shot to fame with an addictive blend of house, hip-hop and Eurodance. Born Paul Van Haver in Brussels to a Flemish mother and Rwandan father in 1985, Stromae attended L’Academie Musicale de Jette at the age of eleven where he played the drums and first began writing his own material. Adopting the name Opsmaestro, he teamed up with fellow rapper J.E.D.I. to form the short-lived duo Suspicion in 2000 and studied at his hometown’s prestigious film school before embarking on a solo career under his more familiar guise. Inspired by Jacques Brel, the Congolese rumba and Cuban son, his first E.P., Juste un cerveau, un flow, un fond et un mic..., arrived in 2007 and led to a four-year record contract with Because Music. While working as a trainee at Brussels radio station NRJ, he recorded the track that would launch him to stardom, “Alors on Danse,” a sax-led hip-house anthem which topped the charts in over a dozen countries and spawned a remix featuring Kanye West. Its 2010 parent album, Cheese, then cemented his success, as did a support slot on The Black Eyed Peas’ European tour and victory at the 2011 European Border Breakers Award. Promoted by a series of viral videos in which an apparently drunk Stromae wandered around a train station, 2013 sophomore Racine Carree reached the top spot across Europe and helped him to pick up the Best Belgian Act accolade at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Stromae then began to make inroads on the other side of the Atlantic in 2014 when he made his US TV debut on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and embarked on a tour across the country. In the same year, Stromae’s track, “Ta fete,” was chosen as the official theme for Belgium’s World Cup campaign, and Lorde invited him to appear alongside Pusha T, Q-Tip, Haim and herself on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack number “Meltdown.” In 2015, Stromae became something of a festival favorite with appearances at SXSW, Coachella and Lollapalooza, and launched a headlining North American trek which concluded at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
