Since its first performance in 2003, Wicked has been one of the most popular shows on Broadway and Wicked tickets have been in high demand. With well over 4,100 performances, Wicked is the 11th longest-running show in Broadway history and Wicked tickets have sold at a record pace during that run. In its current run at the Gershwin Theatre, sales of Wicked tickets have broken the house record 20 different times. The $1,610,934 worth of Wicked tickets sold in the week ending January 1, 2006 broke the record for highest weekly box office gross in Broadway history, a record previously held by The Producers. The continued popularity of Wicked tickets have enabled the show to expand to performances set up all over the world.
Wicked currently has permanent shows in London’s West End, Tokyo, Mexico City, South Korea and the Philippines. There are also four national tours running including two separate US tours, an Australian National Tour and a UK/Ireland National Tour. There is also a production is Sao Paulo, Brazil set to premiere in 2015. The sale of Wicked tickets has broken many records along those tours including Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis and London. Both the North American Tour and the West End production have seen sales of over two million Wicked tickets.
The show is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is a parallel story to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The story follows Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before and during the time frame of the Wizard of Oz. While the film focuses on Dorothy’s journey from that time, the novel and Broadway production give the audience the other side of the story.
In 2004, after the original production, Wicked was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including best musical and two separate nominations for best actress. Idina Menzel won the best actress Tony for her performance as Elphaba, but the show did not win best musical. Still, the best actress award and best musical nomination put Wicked tickets in even higher demand. The show also won a Grammy for Best Musical Show album in 2005 with a full cast recording, which was certified platinum by the RIAA in November of 2006. Historically, a Grammy does help box office sales for a show and Wicked tickets were not an exception.
Rumors have also floated around a film adaptation of the musical could soon be in production. Universal Pictures owns the rights and has been enlightened by the success of motion picture musicals such as Les Miserables. If a film version does hit theaters, it would just be one more thing to boost sales of Wicked tickets, not that any more are needed.
Wicked has been one of the most popular shows in Broadway history and shows no signs of slowing down. In the next few years, the show could easily improve its place on the list of longest running and top grossing shows of all-time.
