Built To Spill Biography
The brainchild of rock journeyman Doug Martsch, ever-changing Idaho outfit Built To Spill enjoyed cult success with an influential blend of post-modern pop, emo and lo-fi indie. Inspired by the likes of Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis, Pavement and Camper Van Beethoven, ex-Farm Days and Treepeople frontman Martsch formed the group in 1992 with the intention of changing its line-up for each album. Guitarist Brett Netson and drummer Ralf Youtz were the first to join the fold for 1993 debut, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, before Brett Nelson and Andy Capps took over their roles for 1994 sophomore There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. After Martsch added side-project The Halo Benders, a more experimental indie-rock duo with Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson, to his resume, Built To Spill returned in 1996 for a joint E.P. with Netson’s previous band, Caustic Resin, and compilation The Normal Years. A year later, the group released their major label debut, Perfect From Now On, through Warner Bros. Records and added Nelson and Scott Plouf as permanent members. The group scored their first Billboard entry in 1999 when fourth studio effort, Keep It Like a Secret, reached No.123, before 2001’s Ancient Melodies of the Future, saw them climb even further into the Top 100. The band then went on hiatus while Martsch embarked on a solo career with 2002’s blues-folk oriented Now You Know, but returned to the stage in 2003 for a series of tours, and then the studio in 2006 for long-awaited comeback album, You in Reverse. Following performances at the Pitchfork Music Festival’s ‘Write The Night’ series and a support slot on Kings of Leon’s world tour, the group added to their catalog with 2009’s critically-acclaimed There Is No Enemy, which peaked at a career-high of No.50 in the States. In 2010, Martsch and Nelson re-recorded several Built To Spill songs in a synth-pop style for an E.P. titled The Electronic Anthology Project, and after scrapping an entire album’s worth of material, a new line-up of Martsch, Netson, guitarist Jim Roth, bassist Jason Albertini and drummer Steve Gere eventually dropped their eighth LP, Untethered Moon, in 2015.
