Despite a revolving door of line-up changes, various alcohol and drug issues and an initially hostile response from rock critics, Black Sabbath remain not only the most successful heavy metal act of all time, but also the most influential. Black Sabbath tickets also remain as popular as ever. Formerly of blues-rock outfit Mythology, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward put the band together in 1968 when they recruited vocalist Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler. Inspired by a Boris Karloff horror titled Black Sabbath, the quartet decided to change their name from Earth and pursue a much darker and heavier direction, resulting in a deal with Philips Records a year later. Their first single, a cover of Crow’s “Evil Woman,” failed to attract much attention but they fared much better with 1970’s self-titled debut, reaching the Top 10 in the UK and spending a year on the Billboard charts. Keen to capitalize on their success, the seminal Paranoid was released in the same year and went on to hit the top spot in their homeland and shift four million copies across the Atlantic, enabling them to sale of many Black Sabbath tickets for their first US tour. The band kept up their momentum with 1971’s Master of Reality and 1972’s Black Sabbath Vol.4, while 1973’s more experimental Sabbath Bloody Sabbath saw them receive the first real critical acclaim of their career. However, the rest of the 70s was beset by problems with substance abuse and following the disappointing sales for 1978’s Never Say Die!, Iommi fired Osbourne from the band. After drafting in Ronnie James Dio as his replacement, the group enjoyed their biggest success in years with 1980’s Heaven & Hell and 1981’s Mob Rules and sold 75,000 Black Sabbath tickets for a gig at L.A.’s Memorial Coliseum. But following a disagreement over live album, Live Evil, Dio decided to quit the band, kick-starting a constant merry-go-round of musicians that would keep spinning throughout the decade. Osbourne temporarily rejoined the band on several occasions, including Live Aid and a late 90s reunion tour which helped the band to pick up their first ever Grammy Award and naturally sell many Black Sabbath tickets. But following an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, the original line-up – minus Ward – permanently reunited in 2012 with the release of Black Sabbath tickets for a 56-date world tour and a brand new studio album, 13, which landed them their first ever Billboard chart-topper.
