Boyz II Men Biography
Inspired by the likes of The Temptations and The Four Tops, vocal harmony outfit Boyz II Men went onto become the most successful R&B group of all time with record sales of over 60 million. Originally known as Unique Attraction, the permanent line-up of Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary and Wanya Morris was established at the Philadelphia High School for Creative & Performing Arts in the late 80s. Naming themselves after a New Edition song and managed by Michael Bivins, the group signed to the Motown label where they first showcased their unique hip-hop doo-wop sound on 1991’s Grammy-winning Cooleyhighharmony, a US No.3 hit which spawned the singles “Motownphilly” and a cover of G.C. Cameron’s “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.” After opening for MC Hammer on his 2 Legit 2 Quit Tour, they scored a number one on both sides of the Atlantic with the theme to Eddie Murphy movie Boomerang, “End Of The Road,” and released a festive album with 1993’s Christmas Interpretations. Boyz II Men tickets for their biggest tour of North America sold out immediately thanks to the success of 1994’s II, the best-selling album by an R&B group ever. Its 14-week number one single, “I’ll Make Love To You” was then dislodged by “On Bended Knee,” making them only the third artist in Billboard history to replace themselves at the top of the charts, whilst the band then broke their own record when they teamed up with Mariah Carey for the 16-week chart-topping duet “One Sweet Day.” In 1997, the group released Evolution, home to their final US No.1, “Four Seasons Of Loneliness,” and Boyz II Men tickets for a tour of the same name, which was then followed by 2000’s Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya, 2001’s Greatest Hits collection, Legacy, and 2002’s Full Circle before McCary was forced to quit the group over his battle with scoliosis. Apart from 2006’s internet-only The Remedy, the trio then spent the rest of the decade focusing on cover versions with 2004’s Throwback, Vol.1, 2007’s Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA, and 2009’s Love, the latter of which saw them tackle songs by Take That, Goo Goo Dolls and Doris Day. Boyz II Men tickets then went on sale for a 20th Anniversary Love Cruise in 2011 before the group scored their first US Top 20 album in nine years with Twenty.
