Born in South Carolina in 1966, Darius Rucker was raised poor but had an abundance of family in his early life. Though he rarely saw his father, he lived with his mother, two aunts, grandmother and 14 other children through his teenage years. He is perhaps best known for being a member of Hootie & The Blowfish, which he started with fellow bandmates Mark Bryan, Soni Sonefeld and Dean Felbert in 1986. As lead vocalist of the popular folk rock band, Rucker has released five studio albums – Cracked Rear View, Fairweather Johnson, Musical Chairs, Hootie & The Blowfish and Looking for Lucky.
The band formed while all three founding members attended the University of South Carolina together. Bryan overheard Rucker singing in the shower and asked him to begin playing open mic nights covering R.E.M. songs. As the group’s most notable presence, Rucker established a captivating hold on the country during the 1990’s and was asked to perform at several memorable ceremonies, including the 1995 World Series, Frank Sinatra’s 80th Birthday and a guest voice spot on the hit television show Friends.
Rucker would then test a solo career beginning in 2001 with the recording of The Return of Mongo Slade for Atlantic, though would later release it via Hidden Beach Recordings as the renamed Back to Then one year later due to contractual dispute. It would be another six years before he recorded his sophomore release, 2008’s Learn to Live, which reformed him as a country artist. The album would go platinum by 2009 and spawned three consecutive No. 1 hits in “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” and “Alright”. Rucker would win the CMA for New Artist of the Year in 2009, furthering his crossover success from Hootie to newfound country star.
He would release his third studio effort, Charleston, SC 1966 in 2010 and saw his fourth straight No. 1 single with “Come Back Song”. The album received a gold certification that year, selling more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone. Rucker would follow Charleston up with 2012’s True Believers, which propelled him to international stardom with his rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel”. The song would earn him a win for Best Country Solo Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, making him just the third African American to win a Grammy in a country category.
In 2015, Rucker released Southern Style, his fourth LP. The lead single, “Homegrown Honey”, reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay charts in 2015 and was followed by the second single and title track.
