A Few Good Reasons to Buy Doobie Brothers Tickets on TicketIQ.com

Emerging from the early 70s Californian music scene, The Doobie Brothers went on to conquer the charts as both hippyish boogie rockers and slick blue-eyed soulmen. The original line-up of Tom Johnston, guitarist Patrick Simmons, bassist Dave Shogren and drummer John Hartman first came together in 1970. Named after the slang term for marijuana, the group released their self-titled debut in the same year before Tiran Porter replaced Shogren and Michael Hossack briefly joined as a second drummer. Spawning their first major hit, “Listen to the Music,” 1972 sophomore Toulouse Street proved to be their commercial breakthrough and was followed by 1973’s Top 10 entry The Captain and Me. After Keith Knudsen took over from Hossack, the band reached number one with fourth LP, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and its third single, “Black Water.” But following the relatively disappointing sales of 1975’s Stampede, the group decided to abandon their familiar West Coast rock sound and take on new vocalist Michael McDonald and former Steely Dan guitarist Jeff Baxter. 1976’s Takin’ It To The Streets first showcased the band’s new blend of jazz-pop, funk and soul, and proved to be just as popular as their earlier material, with 1977’s Livin’ On The Fault Line further cementing their reinvention. The Doobie Brothers then enjoyed the biggest success of their career when 1978’s Minute By Minute spent five weeks at the top of the charts and also produced a number one hit in the shape of “What A Fool Believes.” Hartman and Baxter quit shortly after, leaving Simmons as the only original member, but after adding 1980’s One Step Closer to their catalog and embarking on a farewell tour, the band called it a day. The early 70s line-up then reunited for a 1987 tour before heading back into the studio to record 1989 comeback Cycles, which gave them a final US Top 10 hit, “The Doctor,” and then 1991 follow-up Brotherhood. McDonald briefly returned to the fold for a 1996 tour which was documented on live album, Rockin’ Down the Highway, and following 2000’s Sibling Rivalry, the group, in various incarnations, became a fixture of the nostalgia circuit. The band released their first new LP in a decade with 2010’s World Gone Crazy before teaming up with the likes of Brad Paisley and Toby Keith on 2014’s Southbound, a collection of country-tinged reworkings which gave them their highest US chart position in nearly 25 years.
