In an age where TV talent shows allow hopeful stars a quick-fix route to success, acoustic singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran did it the hard way, performing an astonishing 300 gigs in 2009 alone. Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1991, Sheeran developed a love of music from an early age, citing in interviews that one of his main childhood memories is of listening to Van Morrison during countless car journeys to London with his parents. He began his career in 2005 when he independently released The Orange Room E.P. and then later his self-titled debut album and 2007 follow-up Want Some. After an unsuccessful audition to land a part in British TV drama Britannia High, he became a guitar technician for one-hit wonders Nizlopi and on hearing that James Morrison once played 200 shows in just 12 months, Sheeran promised himself to better that tally. Initially, Ed Sheeran tickets couldn’t even be given away, as he regularly performed in front of crowds as low as five people. But thanks to an increasingly popular YouTube profile, support slots with Example and Just Jack, and a strong connection with urban online channel, SB.TV, he slowly built up a bigger following. Championed by the likes of Elton John and Jamie Foxx, the latter of whom invited him to spend time at his personal Hollywood recording studio after hearing him on his Sirius radio show, The Foxxhole, Sheeran then teamed up with several of the grime scene’s key figures for his 2011 E.P., The No.5 Collaborations Project. After signing with Atlantic Records, he achieved his commercial breakthrough with “The A Team,” a poignant tale about a heroin-addicted prostitute, which reached No.3 in his homeland and helped to launch the sales of both Ed Sheeran tickets and major-label debut album, +, through the roof. In 2012, he won Best British Male & Best British Breakthrough at the BRIT Awards, guested on hits by rappers Wretch 32 and Devlin, and performed with members of Pink Floyd and Genesis at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony. Across the Atlantic, he opened for Snow Patrol on their Fallen Empires tour, reached No.5 with the million-selling + and released Ed Sheeran tickets for his first major North American tour at the beginning of 2013.
