Formed in the aftermath of bandmate Kurt Cobain’s death, Dave Grohl incredibly went on to sell more records as frontman of Foo Fighters than he did as drummer in Nirvana. Named after a World War II term for UFOs, Grohl recruited Sunny Day Real Estate bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith alongside former Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear in 1995, having already recorded their self-titled album entirely by himself. Foo Fighters tickets for their first ever show at Arcata’s Jambalaya Club then went on sale before they supported Mike Watt and appeared at the Reading Festival. After Alanis Morissette drummer Taylor Hawkins replaced Goldsmith, they teamed up with Gil Norton on 1997’s The Colour & The Shape and contributed to The X-Files and Godzilla soundtracks before Smear became the second member to leave. Grohl’s former Scream bandmate Franz Stahl temporarily filled the gap until Chris Shiflett was appointed shortly after the recording of There Is Nothing Left To Lose, their 1998 third LP, which spawned their first US Hot 100, hit, “Learn To Fly.” Following a three-year hiatus which saw the band almost break up, they returned in 2002 with the UK number one album, One By One, and followed it up with 2005’s In Your Honor, a 2CD half-acoustic/half-rock album recorded at their own Studio 606 West which also produced their highest-charting US single, “Best Of You.” The group then released Foo Fighters tickets for a series of joint shows with Weezer named the Foozer Tour before performing their biggest ever gig at London’s Hyde Park, whilst their three dates at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre were recorded for 2006 live album, Skin & Bones. 2008’s Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace was preceded by lead single, “The Pretender,” which went onto spend 18 weeks at the top of the Modern Rock Chart, while Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones then joined them on stage for their gig at Wembley Stadium. In 2009, the band released their first Greatest Hits collection, but far from signifying the end of their career, it appeared to boost it as 2011’s Wasting Light not only became their first US number one album but also won five Grammy Awards to take their lifetime total to eleven. Following the release of their Back and Forth documentary and a headline slot at Lollapalooza’s 20th anniversary, Foo Fighters tickets were snapped up for a world tour which Grohl later claimed would be their last for some time.
