The brainchild of British guitarist Mick Jones, Anglo-American outfit Foreigner sold more than 80 million records worldwide to become one of the biggest bands of the arena rock era. Formed in 1976, frontman Lou Gramm, guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Ed Gagliardi, keyboardist Al Greenwood, drummer Dennis Elliott and leader Jones signed with Atlantic Records shortly after and enjoyed immediate success with their 1977 self-titled debut thanks to Top 10 singles “Feels Like The First Time” and “Cold as Ice.” 1978 follow-up Double Vision strengthened their position in the rock elite, shifting seven million copies in the US alone, as did their performance in front of 200,000 people at California Jam II. Gagliardi was then replaced by Rick Wills for 1979’s Head Games before the sextet were reduced to a quartet when Greenwood and McDonald were sacked a year later. After teaming up with producer Mutt Lange, the band reached number one on the Billboard 200 for the first time with 1981’s 4, while 1984’s Agent Provocateur saw them crossover to the MTV generation with its US number one hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Following an extensive nine-month tour which included an appearance at the inaugural Farm Aid, the group took a hiatus to pursue various solo projects before returning in 1987 with Inside Information. Gramm then permanently left the group in 1990 and was replaced by former Buster Brown frontman Johnny Edwards, who made his recording debut on 1991’s Unusual Heat. But Edwards’ tenure proved to be short-lived, and after reconciling their creative differences, Gramm rejoined the group in time for 1992’s hits collection, The Very Best… and Beyond. The failure of 1994’s Mr. Moonlight to enter the Top 100 saw Foreigner withdraw from recording and instead focus on their reputation as a live act including a tour with fellow 70s rock survivors Journey and a 25th anniversary trek. Despite Gramm’s second departure in 2003, the group remained a popular live draw, embarking on co-headlining tours with Def Leppard, Styx and Kansas, and releasing a hit live album, Extended Versions, with new frontman Kelly Hansen. The band finally returned to the studio in 2009 for Can’t Slow Down, an album co-produced by Jones’ step-son Mark Ronson, which gave them their highest US chart peak for 22 years. 2011’s stripped-back Acoustique then followed, as did an appearance on Don Henley’s Soundtrack of Summer tour, and an induction for Gramm and Jones into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
