Katy Perry Biography & Discography

Formerly a contemporary Christian vocalist, Katy Perry shed her rather conservative image to become one of the most successful pure pop acts of the 21st Century. Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California in 1984, she grew up singing in her parents’ church as a schoolgirl before releasing a gospel album through the Red Hill label at the age of just 15. Previously forbidden to listen to ‘secular music,’ she then reinvented herself as a more mainstream pop star when she moved to Los Angeles two years later, hooking up with producers Glen Ballard and The Matrix for several albums that were later shelved. Having adopted her mother’s maiden name to avoid confusion with the actress Kate Hudson, Perry eventually managed to release a record under hew new guise with 2008’s One Of The Boys, a Billboard Top 10 LP which spawned the seven-week chart-topper “I Kissed A Girl.” Katy Perry tickets then went on sale for her first series of headline shows, the “Hello Katy Tour”, and after co-hosting the MTV Europe Music Awards, in which she picked up Best New Act, she also supported No Doubt on their 2009 North American summer dates. Following guest appearances on hits by 3OH3! and Timbaland and an MTV Unplugged session, she returned in 2010 with her second album, Teenage Dream. Incredibly, “California Gurls,” the title track, “Firework,” “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night” all topped the Billboard Hot 100 making her the first female artist ever to achieve five number ones from the same album as well as equaling Michael Jackson’s record. The albums colossal success meant that Katy Perry tickets for the majority of her 124-date “California Dreams” world tour sold out instantly, raking in an impressive $59m in the process. In 2011, Perry voiced Smurfette in the big-screen adaptation of The Smurfs, performed in front of 100,000 people at the “Rock In Rio Festival” and was awarded MTV’s Artist Of The Year. Shortly after her brief one-year marriage to comedian Russell Brand ended in divorce, she released a 2012 deluxe edition of her sophomore album titled The Complete Confection, which produced another number one in the shape of “Part Of Me.” Whilst later that year, fans who had bought Katy Perry tickets for her last tour got the chance to relive the show in all its glory again when 3D concert movie, Katy Perry: Part Of Me, was released in theaters.
