A hip-hop chart act in his early teens, Lil Wayne made the transition to adult superstar with ease, becoming one of the most popular and prolific rappers of all time. Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. in New Orleans in 1982, he began MCing aged eight and mentored by Cash Money Records’ Bryan Williams, released a collaborative album with B.G., True Story, just three years later. After dropping out of school to pursue his music career, he joined Hot Boys, who went onto reach the Top 5 with 1999’s major-label debut, Guerrilla Warfare, before disbanding, while in the same year he released his solo debut, The Block Is Hot. After following it up with 2000’s Lights Out and 2002’s 500 Degreez, he released Lil Wayne tickets for several headline shows, appeared on Destiny’s Child’s “Soldier” and gained his first solo US Top 20 hit, “Go DJ,” which was taken from 2004’s Tha Carter. A sequel followed a year later, peaking at No.2 and eventually shifting two million copies, whilst after being made the President of Cash Money, he founded his own Young Money Entertainment label, which would later launch the careers of Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. Birdman collaboration, Like Father, Like Son, was his only studio effort over the next three years as he concentrated on a series of critically-acclaimed mix-tapes including Dedication 2 and Da Drought 3. But after being named MTV’s Hottest MC In The Game, he returned in 2008 with Tha Carter III, a Billboard number one which sold over one million copies in its first week, spawned his first US Hot 100 chart-topper, “Lollipop,” and helped him to land four Grammys. Lil Wayne tickets then went on sale for his biggest ever hometown show, while he also became the first hip-hop artist to perform at the Country Music Awards, won 8 BET Hip-Hop Awards and appeared alongside Leona Lewis, Kid Rock and T.I. at the MTV Video Music Awards. 2009’s Rebirth saw him embrace rock music, but following the release of chart-topping Jay Sean collaboration, “Down,” the We Are Young Money compilation and Lil Wayne tickets for the Young Money Presents: America’s Most Wanted Tour, he returned to more familiar territory with 2010’s I Am Not A Human Being. 2011’s Tha Carter IV landed him a third US No.1 album, whilst in 2012 he passed Elvis Presley as the male artist with the most entries on the Billboard charts.
