Alongside the likes of Frank Ocean, Drake and The Weeknd, singer-songwriter Miguel has been instrumental in bringing soul back to an R&B scene dominated by AutoTune and Euro-pop. Born Miguel Jontel Pimentel in San Pedro, Los Angeles in 1986 to a Mexican father and African-American mother, he began writing songs on a four-track recorder aged just 14 before spending the rest of his high school years working with the Drop Squad production company. After turning down a position in urban pop outfit Fatty Koo, he signed to Black Ice in 2004, who released his debut single, “Getcha Hands Up.” But after clashing with the indie label over creative differences and the shelving of his first album, Young & Free, Miguel left for Jive Records. Unable to release any material for several years after Black Ice sued him for breach of contract, he spent the rest of the 00s writing tracks for other artists including Asher Roth (“His Dream”), Usher (“Revolver”) and Musiq Soulchild (“IfULeave”). Following 2008’s Mischief: The Mixtape, he finally got the chance to showcase his eclectic mix of R&B, hip-hop and electronica with 2010 debut album, All I Want Is You, a sleeper hit which went onto sell half a million copies and spawned the US R&B No.1 single, “Sure Thing.” Although Miguel tickets for his own headline shows had yet to go on sale, fans got the chance to see him live when he supported Usher, Mary J. Blige and Trey Songz on their North American tours. Miguel then received a Grammy nomination for his contribution to Jaheim’s “Finding My Way Back” and soon went one better by winning Best New Artist at the Soul Train Music Awards and Best Collaboration at the BET Awards for his guest appearance of Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb.” Miguel tickets were then released for his first major headline tour in 2011 before he previewed his sophomore with three volumes of an E.P. series entitled Art Dealer Chic and appeared alongside Kanye West, Busta Rhymes and Mos Def on Fat Joe’s single, “Pride & Joy.” 2012’s critically-acclaimed Kaleidoscope Dream entered the Billboard charts at No.3 and produced his biggest US Hot 100 hit, “Adorn,” whilst Miguel tickets were snapped up for a tour to promote the record, which also included his first ever dates in the UK.
