One of the leading ladies of the alt-country scene, Neko Case has enjoyed success as both a solo artist and as a key member of Canadian indie-rockers The New Pornographers. Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1970, Case left home aged just 15 and three years later began playing drums for various Northwest punk bands. While studying at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, she joined ‘cuddlecore’ outfit Cub and formed her own pop-punk combo, Maow, with guitarist Tobey Black and bassist Corrina Hammond, where she made the leap from drummer to lead singer.
After releasing full-length LP, The Unforgiving Sounds of Maow, with the latter, Case played with roots rockers The Weasels and then embarked on a solo career with 1997 debut, The Virginian. Recorded with regular backing band Her Boyfriends, the album saw Case cover tracks from the likes of Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb and Queen and was followed up in 2000 with a largely original affair, Furnace Room Lullaby, which further established her country noir sound. In the same year, Case teamed up with Carolyn Mark under the guise of The Corn Sisters to record one-off album, The Other Woman, and provided vocals for several tracks on supergroup The New Pornographers’ debut, Mass Romantic.
Cementing her status as an honorary Canadian, Case paid tribute to the likes of Neil Young and Sook-Yin Lee on 2001’s Canadian Amp E.P. before receiving the strongest reviews of her career for 2002’s Blacklisted. In between further contributions to The New Pornographers’ catalog, Case joined forces with The Sadies and Kelly Hogan for her first live album, 2004’s The Tigers Have Spoken, and was invited to open for Nick Cave on his North American tour.
In 2006, Case scored her first Billboard chart entry when fourth solo effort, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, reached No.55, while 2007’s Live From Austin, TX, and an appearance on The New Pornographers’ Top 40 breakthrough, Challengers, continued to raise her profile. 2009’s Middle Cyclone peaked at No.3 on the Billboard 200 as a result and later picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You arrived in 2013, while in 2015, Case headed out onto the road with Alabama Shakes for a North American trek.
