One of Canada’s biggest musical exports, Nickelback racked up multiple Top 10 hits, Grammy nominations and sell-out world tours with a potent blend of radio-friendly alt-rock and emotive post-grunge. Formed in their hometown of Hanna in the early 90s, the group initially began as a Led Zeppelin and Metallica covers band named The Village Idiots before frontman Chad Kroeger, his bassist brother Mike, drummer cousin Brandon and guitarist friend Ryan Peake made the switch to performing their own material under their more familiar guise of Nickelback. The group released both their first E.P., Hesher, and full-length debut, Curb, in 1996, before Brandon left to be replaced by Ryan Vikedal.

After signing with Roadrunner Records, the group issued their sophomore, The State, in 2000 and gradually began to build up a large following thanks to its extensive accompanying tour. The band’s career went stratospheric in 2001 when breakthrough single, “How You Remind Me,” hit number one on the US Hot 100, pushing parent album, Silver Side Up, to sales of over ten million copies worldwide and picking up the first of the group’s six Grammy nominations. A year later, Chad Kroeger teamed up with Josey Scott to record the theme to Spider-Man, while 2003’s fourth LP, The Long Road, sustained their momentum, spawning four US Top 10 singles. In 2005, the group changed drummers for a third time when 3 Doors Down’s Daniel Adair replaced Vikedal, and invited ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell to appear on their first chart-topping album, All The Right Reasons.

Supported by a year-long tour which included a European support slot with Bon Jovi and an attention-grabbing star-studded video for fifth single “Rockstar,” the record further established Nickelback’s status as the kings of slick alt-rock, as did the Mutt Lange-produced 2008 follow-up, Dark Horse. In 2010, the band performed at the closing ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, and a year later, scored their third consecutive US Top 2 album with Here and Now, narrowly missing out on the top spot by an agonisingly close 418 copies. After issuing their first compilation, The Best of Nickelback, Volume 1, the group left the Roadrunner label and released No Fixed Address, a more pop-oriented affair featuring an unlikely collaboration with Flo Rida, through Universal in 2014.
