Snoop Dogg Biography
Instrumental in developing the West Coast G-funk sound that defined the early 90s, Snoop Dogg has managed to outlast most of his contemporaries to become one of the most consistently successful hip-hop artists of the last 20 years. Born Calvin Broadus in Long Beach, California in 1971, he was a troublesome teenager, spending several of his post high-school years in and out of prison before he formed the rap outfit 213 with Warren G and cousins Nate Dogg and Lil ½ Dead. Discovered by Dr. Dre, who asked him to appear on the 1992 theme to Deep Cover and his seminal LP, The Chronic, he then signed to the Death Row label, where he became the first artist to debut at the top of the Billboard charts with his debut album, Doggystyle, and scored hits with “Gin & Juice” and “What’s My Name.” Snoop Dogg tickets became in short supply for the subsequent three years as he dealt with a murder charge that he was eventually acquitted of. But he moved away from his gangster roots in 1996 with Tha Doggfather, also appearing at Lollapalooza a year later, and continued to pursue a less aggressive sound with 1998’s Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not To Be Told, 1998’s No Limit Top Dogg and 2000’s The Last Meal. Following appearances in The Wash and Training Day, he released Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$ in 2002 before landing his most high-profile film role as Huggy Bear in the remake of Starsky & Hutch. Snoop Dogg tickets became more in demand following the release of 2004’s R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, which spawned hit collaborations with Justin Timberlake (“Signs”) and Pharrell Williams (“Drop It Like It’s Hot”), the latter of which also became his first solo number one. Snoop then released a record with 213, The Hard Way, before topping the chart for a second time as a guest on Akon’s “I Wanna Love You.” After 2006’s The Blue Carpet Treatment, he became the first artist to release a track as a ringtone, performed at the Hamburg leg of Live Earth and appeared in the Bollywood film, Singh Is Kinng. 2008’s Ego Trippin and 2009’s Malice n Wonderland preceded a third US Hot 100 number one alongside Katy Perry (“California Gurls”), 2011’s Doggumentary & Wiz Khalifa movie/soundtrack Mac & Devin Go To High School. In 2012, he reinvented himself as a reggae artist under the moniker, Snoop Lion, recorded the Reincarnated LP and released Snoop Dogg tickets for a North American tour covering both his old and new incarnations.
