Stone Temple Pilots Biography
Arriving during the height of the grunge scene’s popularity but more inspired by the classic arena rock of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots went onto become one of the biggest alternative bands of the 90s. Frontman Scott Weiland, drummer Eric Kretz, guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist brother Robert first came together under the guise of Swing and then Mighty Joe Young, where they toured across the San Diego live circuit and supported Henry Rollins, before adopting their more familiar moniker. 1992’s debut album, Core, peaked at No.3 on the US charts and after opening for Rage Against The Machine and Megadeth, Stone Temple Pilots tickets were snapped up for a three-month North American tour. In 1994, Top 40 single “Plush” won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and was followed by their first chart-topping LP, Purple, and their biggest Billboard hit, “Interstate Love Song.” Their third studio effort, 1996’s Tiny Music…Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop saw them flirt with psychedelia and glam-rock but its subsequent tour was cut short following Weiland’s much-publicised battle with substance abuse. The remaining members then recruited Ten Inch Men’s Dave Coutts to record a self-titled album as Talk Show, while Weiland released a solo effort, 12 Bar Blues, in 1998. A year later, the full line-up unexpectedly reunited for the back-to-basics No.4, recorded a VH1 Storytellers special and released Stone Temple Pilots tickets for a tour alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers. But following 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da and an appearance on the Family Values Tour with Linkin Park and Godsmack, the band called it a day with the release of 2003’s Greatest Hits collection, Thank You. Weiland then joined Slash’s super-group Velvet Revolver while the DeLeo brothers formed Army of Anyone with Filter’s Richard Patrick. But the group reformed in 2008 when they embarked on a North American tour, selling an average $230,000 worth of Stone Temple Pilots tickets for each of its 65 dates, and also performed at the Virgin Mobile Festival and New Orleans’ Voodoo Experience. In 2010, they returned to the studio for their self-titled fifth album, a US No.2 hit, and followed sets at SXSW and Download with their first ever tour of South East Asia. Their show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre was later released for their first live DVD, Alive In The Windy City, in 2012.
