One of Australia’s most acclaimed musical exports, Tame Impala became critical favorites with a reverb-soaked sound indebted to the psychedelic rock of the 60s and 70s. Initially formed as a solo vehicle for frontman Kevin Parker in the late 90s, Tame Impala expanded to a full band in 2007 when bassist Dominic Simper and drummer Jay Watson joined the fold. Discovered by indie label Modular Records via Myspace, the group then released their self-titled first E.P. a year later, and instantly found an audience on influential Aussie radio station, Triple J. The band continued to build up their profile with opening performances for the likes of You Am I, The Black Keys and Yeasayer, sets at Southbound, Meredith Music and Falls Festivals and a headlining Skeleton Tiger tour. After adding multi-instrumentalist Nick Allbrook to their line-up, Tame Impala released their first official single, “Sundown Syndrome,” in 2009 and followed it up a year later with their full-length debut album, Innerspeaker. The self-produced LP later received four ARIA nominations and was supported by an extensive world tour which took in festival spots at Splendour in the Grass and Reading and 20 sold-out shows in the US, and also spawned a live album recorded at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel. The group then headed into the studio with mixer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips) once again for 2012’s more emotive and less guitar-heavy sophomore Lonerism, which like its predecessor won the prestigious J Award and also topped end-of-year polls from the NME, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and picked up a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Album. After serving as producer on the eponymous debut album from French dream-pop chanteuse Melody’s Echo Chamber, Parker ventured further outside the band with the formation of space disco outfit AAA Aardvark Getdown Services and guest spots on Mark Ronson’s Uptown Special. Following the release of their second live album and an unlikely collaboration with rapper Kendrick Lamar on the Divergent soundtrack, Tame Impala added to their discography with third LP Currents, an experimental affair which saw them embrace elements of dance, pop and R&B music to rave reviews.
