They Might Be Giants Biography

Named after a 1971 George C. Scott film, They Might Be Giants’ ability to adapt their quirky sound to everything from children’s music to TV and film soundtracks has helped them become one of the most enduring acts from the 80s college rock scene. Guitarist John Flansburgh and accordionist John Linnell, two former high school classmates who moved to the same Brooklyn apartment on the same day, formed the band in 1982 and soon began playing to audiences with They Might Be Giants tickets across the New York circuit. In 1984, they kicked off a three-year residency at Lower East Side club Darinka, while in 1986, they launched Dial-A-Song, a telephone hotline which played their songs on an answering machine, in a bid to get noticed. The unorthodox strategy paid off when they landed a deal with Bar/None Records, while the demand for They Might Be Giants tickets increased when their 1986 self-titled debut spawned the MTV hit, “Don’t Let’s Start.” Sales of They Might Be Giant tickets continued to soar on the college rock circuit with the release of 1988’s Lincoln, before a deal with Elektra Records and the alt-rock hits “Birdhouse In Your Soul” and “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” boosted their profile even further. Following 1992’s Apollo 18, They Might Be Giants tickets went on sale for a tour which saw the duo abandon their usual drum machine/backing track set-up and hire a permanent live band. But despite this addition of guitars, the band struggled to make their unique voices heard amongst all the grunge that dominated the alternative scene at that time, and the group reverted to being a cult concern again with the release of 1994’s John Henry and 1996’s Factory Showroom. In 1999, they became the first major label act to issue an album in the mp3 format with Long Tall Weekend, and released They Might Be Giants tickets for an accompanying tour. Younger audiences then started to snap up They Might Be Giants tickets when the band recorded the theme tune to Malcolm in the Middle and made the first of many forays into children’s music with 2002’s No! After returning to more adult-oriented fare with 2004’s The Spine and They Might Be Giants tickets for the Spine on the Hiway tour, the group announced a live hiatus. However, they still regularly hit the road in their more family-friendly guise, performing to thousands of children with They Might Be Giants tickets for a 2005 Borders Bookstore tour. The group continued to alternate between their two different audiences throughout the next decade with the likes of the Grammy-nominated Here Comes Science, the short songs collection Nanobots and compilation Idlewild.
