Best-known for their Top 10 single, “Semi-Charmed Life,” San Francisco outfit Third Eye Blind became one of the defining guitar bands of the late 90s thanks to a radio-friendly blend of power-pop, alt-rock and post-grunge. Formed in 1993 by lead vocalist Stephan Jenkins, an English graduate who would enjoy his first taste of success as the producer of Braids’ “Bohemian Rhapsody” cover, the core line-up of former Fungo Mungo bassist Arion Salazar, one-time Joe Satriani student Kevin Cadogan and ex-Counting Crows drummer Brad Hargreaves eventually settled two years later.

Named after the metaphysical concept of a man’s eye, the band soon began to build up a loyal following on the Bay Area scene and following a rapturous response to their support slot at an Oasis show, they landed a deal with Elektra Records. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1997 and went onto spend nearly a year on the Billboard 200, while its singles “How’s It Going To Be,” “Jumper” and “Semi-Charmed Life” all reached the US Top 10, with the latter’s eight week stint atop the Modern Rock Tracks chart breaking a record.

The group followed it up in 1999 with a second million-seller, Blue, and a lengthy tour which featured several guest appearances on U2’s PopMart trek. Following Cadogan’s bitter exit, and subsequent legal battle, in 2000, Third Eye Blind took several years out before returning in 2003 with Out Of The Vein, which despite peaking at No.12 in the US failed to sell a fraction of its predecessors, largely due to the lack of support from their label.

A Greatest Hits collection then followed in 2006, but it would be another three years before the group returned with new material. Released through their own Mega Collider Records imprint, 2009’s Ursa Major peaked at a career high of number three and was followed by a headlining North American tour. The group then suffered another setback shortly after when Cadogan’s replacement Tony Fredianelli also left in acrimonious circumstances, but a new line-up featuring Jenkins, Hargreaves and new recruits Alex Kopp, Kryz Reid and Alex LeCavalier eventually headed into the studio in 2014 to record Third Eye Blind’s final studio effort, Dopamine, before heading out onto the road for a run of 2015 summer shows alongside Dashboard Confessional.
