Zappa Plays Zappa Biography
The legacy of Frank Zappa is carried on by his son in the tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa. Eldest son Dweezil Zappa is lead vocalist and guitarist for the band. Dweezil spent countless hours studying and practicing the late rock legends music. Authenticity is a quality the group prides itself on, accurately recreating each meticulous, pointedly placed note. Zappa Plays Zappa sets out to connect a new era of listeners with his Fathers timeless material. Known for his eccentric, avant-garde style of rock, Zappa’s music was intricately crafted, a complicated yet fascinating sound. It took three years for Dweezil to channel the Spirit of his predecessor and perfect his signature style. When he was ready he held auditions to assemble his passion project, Zappa Plays Zappa. Aaron Arntz (keyboardist, trumpet, and vocals), Peter Griffin (bass), Shelia Gonzalez (Saxophone), Billy Hulting (marimba, mallets, and percussion), Jamie Kime (guitar), and family friend Joe Travers on drums all made the cut. Debuting in 2006, Zappa Plays Zappa tickets were in high demand after people had learned Zappa’s son would be taking the reins. Famed musicians and Zappa collaborators such as Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, and Napoleon Brock all joined the group for storied performances. The honored tribute that took place at the Roseland Theater in December that year was filmed and released on DVD. Zappa Plays Zappa tickets went on sale internationally in 2007 as the group toured heavily throughout North America and Europe. Zappa opened the North American tour with a performance in New York City on Halloween, a longtime tradition of Frank Zappas. The group continued to successfully tour throughout 2008 focusing on Zappa classics from the 1960s to the late 1970s. Dweezil channels his father’s genius on stage, ripping through a plethora of various chords, notes, and riffs, recreating the classics with a touch of his own flare. The band shifted gears and eras in the years to come. Aaron Arntz left ZPZ and was replaced by longtime Frank Zappa associate Ray White. In 2010, Zappa Plays Zappa tickets were back on sale with new members and material. “Return of the son of..”, released in 2010, gathered live performance footage from the tour. The material was a collection of his father’s work throughout the 70’s and 80’s. When asked about selecting material from over 60 albums of material, Dweezil simply stated, “I play my favorites”. The bands impressive recreations of the late Zappa earned them a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance with the classic, “Peaches en Regalia”. With the addition of bassist Kurt Morgan and the departure of members Jamie Kime and Billy Hulting and Peter Griffen, Dweezil and the band are currently paying tribute to his father’s 1974 album Roxy and Elsewhere. Zappa Plays Zappa tickets are now on sale for remaining 2014 performances as well as upcoming dates in 2015.
