A Few Good Reasons to Buy Earth, Wind & Fire Tickets on TicketIQ.com
Formed by musical visionary Maurice White, Earth Wind and Fire became one of the superstar bands of the late 70s with an addictive blend of funk, R&B, disco and jazz. Previously an in-demand session musician for Chess Records, White first joined forces with keyboardist Don Whiteman and vocalist Wade Flemons in Chicago outfit The Salty Peppers, who evolved into Earth, Wind and Fire following a move to Los Angeles in 1970. After adding White’s brother Verdine to their line-up, the group released their self-titled debut a year later, but like 1971 follow-up The Need of Love and their soundtrack to Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, it failed to make a commercial impact. The White brothers dismantled the group shortly after and recruited an entirely new array of musicians including keyboardist Larry Dunn, percussionist Ralph Johnson and singer Philip Bailey. The move paid off when Clive Davis signed them to CBS and after the likes of 1973’s Head to the Sky and 1974’s Open Our Eyes laid the groundwork, the band enjoyed their first blockbuster success with 1975’s That’s the Way of the World, the official soundtrack to the big-screen musical of the same name which spawned a number one single and Best R&B Vocal Performance Grammy winner in the shape of “Emotions.” Live album Gratitude also topped the charts in the same year, and their reputation as performers continued to grow considerably thanks to an increasingly elaborate effects-filled show. Following the release of 1976’s Spirit and 1977’s All ‘n All, the band added to their tally of Top 10 singles with “September” and a cover of The Beatles’ “Got to Get You into My Life,” before 1979’s I Am produced two of their most cherished hits, “Boogie Wonderland” and “After the Love Has Gone.” After recording 1983’s Electric Universe, the band took a four-year hiatus before returning with Touch the World, while 1990’s Heritage saw them attempt to update their sound with a little help from MC Hammer and Sly Stone. 1993’s back-to-basics Millennium, 1997’s In the Name of Love and 2003’s The Promise were then followed by another star-studded affair, 2005’s Illumination, with Kelly Rowland, will.i.am and Brian McKnight just some of the names who helped to introduce the group’s music to a younger audience. Eight years passed before Earth, Wind and Fire headed back into the studio, but the result, 2013’s Now, Then and Forever, gave them their highest US chart peak in 30 years.
