Hamilton Leithauser Biography

The deep crooning voice behind New York-based post-punk heroes The Walkmen, Hamilton Leithauser also enjoyed considerable critical acclaim as a solo artist following the group’s 2011 split. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Leithauser attended the city’s St. Albans School where he would first meet many of his future bandmates, before landing his first music job as an assistant engineer at Virginia’s Inner Ear Studios in his late teens. In 1996, he teamed up with guitarists Peter Bauer and Damon Hege, bassist Mike Sheahan and drummer Hugh MacIntosh to form The Recoys, a retro garage-rock outfit who struggled to find an audience and eventually split three years later. In 2000, Leithauser and Bauer joined forces with ex-Jonathan Fire*Eater members Paul Maroon, Walter Martin and Matt Barrick to found The Walkmen. Renowned for their use of vintage musical instruments, the band immediately drew comparisons with the likes of Pixies, The Velvet Underground and Television with their 2001 self-titled E.P. and 2002 debut album, Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone. 2003 sophomore Bows + Arrows then saw the band break the Billboard 200 and led to an appearance on hit teen drama The O.C., while 2006 follow-up A Hundred Miles Off saw them explore a folksier direction with equally impressive results. After paying homage to John Lennon and Harold Nilsson’s Pussy Cats LP with a track-for-track covers album, the group returned to more original fare with 2008’s You & Me, and supported 2010’s Lisbon with sets at Lollapalooza, All Tomorrow’s Parties and Reading/Leeds festivals. A second consecutive US Top 30 album, Heaven, then arrived in 2012, with the title track later used in the finale of How I Met Your Mother. However, it proved to be the band’s swansong when Bauer announced in 2013 that The Walkmen were embarking on an extreme hiatus. Leithauser wasted little time in launching a solo career, recruiting the likes of Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Fleet Foxes’ Morgan Henderson and Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman for his debut album, Black Hours, a blend of Frank Sinatra-esque chamber pop and classic rock ‘n’ roll which hit stores in the summer of 2014.
