Few rappers have had withstanding underground success quite like Immortal Technique. A native of Harlem, New York, Felipe Andres Coronel was born on February 19, 1978. He states that he was arrested several times during his adolescence for petty crimes and would soon be incarcerated while attending Pennsylvania State University. He returned home after a year-long sentence and attended classes at Baruch College in New York City.
Though he refined his rapping skills while in prison, Immortal Technique would soon begin attending MC battles and would quickly build a cult following in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He released his first studio album Revolutionary Vol. 1 in 2001 without the financial or promotional aid of a music label, paying for his sessions and promos through money won in MC battles. He would follow that release up two years later with Revolutionary Vol. 2. It would be 2008’s The 3rd World that would propel him into the limelight, however, and the album peaked at No. 99 on the Billboard 200 that year.
Known for his politically driven lyrics and as a grassroots activist, Immortal Technique has released three albums since first storming onto the underground hip-hop scene in New York City at the turn of the century. His long awaited and highly anticipated fourth studio album The Middle Passage has yet to be given a release date, but expect the rapper to tour extensively behind it when it does drop.
