The Michigan Wolverines are a member of the Big Ten Conference with 27 varsity teams. Michigan is consistently one of the top athletic departments in the country, finishing in the top five of the NACDA Directors’ Cup 11 of the past 19 years. Overall, Michigan has won 36 NCAA team national championships, with the most coming in men’s ice hockey (9) and men’s swimming (12). The 36 team national championships ranks 10th all-time. One of the most successful Michigan programs is their football team. Their 11 claimed national titles and five unclaimed national titles ranks amongst the most in college football history (the NCAA does not recognize Division-I football national championships). Michigan football has an all-time record of 915-328-36 (.729) with a 20-23 bowl game record and 42 conference titles. In December 2014, Michigan announced the hiring of the program’s 20th head coach, Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, a former starting quarterback at Michigan in the 1980’s, left his head coaching position of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, to return to his alma mater. Harbaugh took over a Michigan program that missed a postseason bowl appearance for the third time since 1975. Michigan plays in the largest stadium in college football, seating over 107,000 people. The Michigan men’s basketball team has also seen its share of success. The Wolverines have made the NCAA tournament 25 times, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in 13 seasons, appearing in 13 Elite Eight’s, seven Final Fours and five national championship games. The Michigan’s lone NCAA championship came in 1989 under interim head coach Steve Fisher. Fisher took over the head coaching position immediately before the 1989 NCAA tournament after Bill Frieder left for Arizona State. Fisher would have a controversial tenure at Michigan as he signed one of the most iconic recruiting classes ever, the Fab Five. Fisher would lead the Fab Five to two consecutive NCAA championship games in their freshmen and sophomore seasons. However, both seasons were vacated by the NCAA. Fisher would leave after winning the NIT Championship in 1997 and was forced out due to an NCAA investigation. Michigan is currently led by John Beilein, who took over the program in 2007. Michigan’s 22 losses in the 2007-2008 season were the most in Michigan’s history but Beilein bounced back tremendously, leading the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament in five of their next six seasons including an Elite Eight appearance in 2014 and a national championship game appearance in 2013 (losing to Louisville).

Michigan Wolverines News

5-29-15: The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team struggled mightily during the 2015-16 season, going just 16-16 (8-10 in conference games) and failing to enter the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season. They'll look to reboot this season and make a bid for tournament play come March.

9-22-14: What a disastrous start to the season for the Wolverines. Michigan turned the ball over four times Saturday against Utah, bringing its total to 11 over the last three games. Devin Gardner was 14 of 26 passing for 148 yards with two interceptions. Michigan struggled to protect Gardner from Utah's defensive front as the Wolverines fell 26-10. Head coach Brady Hoke should be on the hot seat and I would not be shocked if he gets canned at season’s end if their downward trend continues. Michigan will look to turn things around this week as they host Minnesota.

9-9-14: Michigan's NCAA record streak of games without being shut out at 365 was snapped this past Saturday as the Wolverines were crushed 31-0 by Notre Dame. Michigan’s offense was and is a mess. Devin Gardner was 19-for-32 for 189 yards and he committed four second-half turnovers for Michigan. Michigan has now lost its 11th straight road game to a ranked team. Their last win came in South Bend in 2006. Head coach Brady Hoke is now 7-12 away from Ann Arbor. Michigan hosts Miami of Ohio this weekend.

9-4-14: The last time Michigan played Appalachian State in 2007, Appalachian was an FCS program and shocked Michigan 34-32 in Ann Arbor. Well, that didn’t happen this time around as the Wolverines dominated last week crushing the Mountaineers 52-14. Michigan gained 560 total, including 350 on the ground. Quarterback Devin Gardner threw three touchdowns, all to Devin Funchess. Derrick Green rushed for 170 yards and a TD, and De'Veon Smith added rushing 115 yards and two scores. They will need a repeat performance this week as the Wolverines travel to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Irish are ranked No. 16 in the AP Top 25.
