The Nebraska Cornhuskers are a member of the Big Ten Conference fielding 24 varsity teams. The Cornhuskers are most known for their football team, which is one of the most successful programs in the sport. Nebraska began playing football in 1890 and has posted a 874-361-40 record over those 125 seasons. They are 25-26 in postseason bowl games, have 46 conference titles, 10 division titles, 54 consensus All-Americans, three Heisman Trophy winners, five claimed national championships and nine unclaimed national titles. Nebraska has the fourth most all-time victories in major college football and is one of 11 football teams to have 800 or more victories. Additionally, they have the best winning percentage and the most wins of any college football program in the last 50 years. Nebraska’s claimed football championships came under Bob Devaney (1970 and 1971) and Tom Osborne (1994, 1995, 1997). Additionally, Nebraska has been named national championships by other publications not universally recognized by college football (1915, 1921, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1993 and 1999). Nebraska is one of a few college football programs to win three national championships in a four year span and one of three teams to have consensus back-to-back national titles by a Division 1-A school (Alabama, 2011-2012; 1994-1995, Nebraska; 1956-1957, Oklahoma). Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier and Eric Crouch are the three Heisman Trophy winners who played at Nebraska and Rodgers is considered Nebraska’s best player in school history. Current head coach Mike Riley took over the program following the 2014 season after coaching at Oregon State. Unfortunately for Nebraska, their basketball team hasn’t shared the same amounts of success as the football program. Nebraska basketball has made the NCAA tournament seven times with the most recent appearance breaking a decade and a half absence in 2014. They have six conference titles with the last occurring in 1950. Nebraska is one of two “BCS teams” to never win a single game in the NCAA tournament with the other being one of their conference foes, Northwestern. Despite their lack of NCAA tournament success, they still have managed a 1,370-1,218 record since 1897 and they did win the 1996 NIT Championship. Current head coach Tim Miles finished his third season at the helm in 2015. He has produced a 47-49 record with his best season coming in 2013-14 when Nebraska made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998.

Nebraska Cornhuskers News

6-2-15: Louisville transfer Anton Gill is heading to Nebraska for the 2015-16 NCAA basketball season. However, the junior will be forced to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules. Gill made the decision public on Tuesday.

10-27-14: The Cornhuskers got another record performance from Ameer Abdullah Saturday as Nebraska beat up on Rutgers 42-24. Abdullah accumulated a school record 341 all-purpose yards. He now has 6,604 yards for his career to move into second on the Big Ten all-time list. Abdullah rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Bo Pelini’s team hosts Purdue this week.

10-20-14: The Cornhuskers outscored Northwestern 24-0 in the second half to bounce back from its loss at Michigan State two weeks ago, beating the Wildcats 38-17. Running back Amer Abdullah ran for 146 yards on 23 carries with four rushing TD’s. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. threw for 221 yards and added 55 rushing yards. Nebraska limited Northwestern to just 290 total yards. AP No. 16 Nebraska will host Rutgers this week. 10-15-14: The Cornhuskers had a bye this week, but they nearly rallied from a 24-point deficit last week at Michigan State. Ultimately, they fell 27-22. They hit the road this week to face a pesky Northwestern team. Nebraska has gotten 1,752 yards of total offense and 12 total touchdowns from quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. Running back Ameer Abdullah has run for 878 yards and 10 TDs.

10-6-14: The Cornhuskers had a furious comeback in the fourth quarter against AP No. 10 Michigan State, rallying from a 27-3 deficit. Tommy Armstrong Jr. was intercepted with 30 seconds left to end any hopes of a major comeback. Ameer Abdullah was held to just 45 rushing yards on 24 carries. Armstrong threw for 273 yards but completed just 20 of 43 passes and was intercepted twice. Nebraska has a bye this week.

10-1-14: The Cornhuskers are 5-0 on the year, and they continue to roll as they beat Illinois 45-14 over the weekend. Heisman hopeful Ameer Abdullah ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Nebraska ran for 458 yards, compared to just 78 on the ground for Illinois. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. had 232 yards of total offense. They’re off to their best start since 2010, but will have a tough test this weekend when they travel to East Lansing to face off against AP No. 10 Michigan State.

9-22-14: The Cornhuskers are 4-0 and are off to their best start since 2011. Running back Ameer Abdullah has been dominant, and quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. has looked poised under center. Nebraska beat rival Miami 41-31 in Lincoln this past weekend. Abdullah ran for 229 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. Armstrong completed nine of 13 passes for 113 yards and two TDs. Nebraska did allow 435 yards to Miami but forced three turnovers. The Cornhuskers will host a slumping Illinois team this weekend.

9-15-14: After barely escaping FCS McNeese State at home last weekend, the Cornhuskers followed up with a dominant 55-19 win at hapless Fresno State. Nebraska wasn’t challenged a single bit and senior tailback Ameer Abdullah surpassed his entire rushing total from last week on one 57-yard run. They have an interesting matchup next week when the Miami Hurricanes travel to Lincoln to take on the Cornhuskers.

9-9-14: The Cornhuskers needed their best player to make a play this past Saturday to beat McNeese State 31-24. However, no one could have expected running back Ameer Abdullah to come through the way he did to prevent Nebraska from suffering an upset of massive proportions. Abdullah turned a short pass from QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. into a game-winning 58-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left. He broke numerous tackles along the way to capture the victory. Abdullah finished with 150 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Nebraska will travel to California to take on Fresno State this Saturday.

9-4-14: The Cornhuskers easy 55-7 win over Florida Atlantic had all of the things its coaching staff and fans wanted to see. They had solid quarterback play, lots and lots of Ameer Abdullah running the ball and a defense that didn't give up too many big plays. However, the game came at a price. Star defensive end Randy Gregory got hurt early, and had arthroscopic surgery on his knee this past Sunday and is doubtful for Nebraska's game this Saturday against McNeese State. Nebraska won’t miss Gregory against the Cowboys, but they will need him if the Cornhusker’s have aspirations of winning the Big Ten.
