Northwestern Wildcats News

11-9-14: The Northwestern Wildcats hosted the Michigan State Wolverines this week at home in Ryan Field in what was a Big Ten matchup for both schools. Northwestern came into the game trying to snap a three game losing streak as the losses dropped their record to 3-5 and 2-3 in the conference. Meanwhile Michigan came into the game fresh off a victory over Indiana that improved their record to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Big Ten. If you were watching the game you probably got a good nap in as not much scoring happened in this contest. The two teams combined for just 520 yards of total offense in the contest while each team scored just one touchdown and one field goal each in the contest. This game came down to the final seconds of the game with Northwestern trailing 10-3 in the contest with the Wildcats marching down the field. Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian threw a 3 yard touchdown pass to Tony Jones with 0:03 left in the game to pull within 10-9 with a decision on their hands. Would the team kick the PAT and take their chances in overtime or would the team go for the two point conversion and go for the win? Northwestern chose the latter as they rolled the dice and the decision would come back to haunt them as the two point conversion failed. Northwestern dropped the game 10-9 and saw their record drop to 3-6 and 2-4 in the conference in the contest. With the victory Michigan survived to improve their record to 5-5 and 3-3 in the Big Ten this season. Northwestern had just 180 yards of total offense in this contest and only 75 yards from their passing game in the loss. Northwestern has lost two games in a row before the off week and will bring a 3-4 and 2-2 Big Ten record into the contest. Iowa will also take the week off this week to prepare for the contest after losing their last game against Maryland to drop their record to 5-2 and 2-1 in the conference this season. The Wildcats defense has only allowed an average on 20.4 points per game this season for the 25th best defense in the nation while Iowa is averaging 27.0 points per game this year. Northwestern has to put the football in the end zone as well if they want to win and that will have to come in the air and on the arm of quarterback Trevor Siemian. Siemian has 1,496 passing yards this season with just four touchdown passes as the offense has struggled this season. Northwestern’s offense is only averaging 20.9 points per game which is good for the 113th on the other hand has been a little bit stingier with allowing points to go on the scoreboard as they have only allowed 21.9 points per game which is good for the 37thNorthwestern tickets for the next Wildcats game as the team travels to Iowa next Saturday to take on the Hawkeyes on the road in Kinnick Stadium. Northwestern was fresh off shocking the nation two weeks in row upsetting both Penn State and Wisconsin while improving their record to 3-2 with three straight victories and a 2-0 Big Ten conference record. Minnesota meanwhile was 4-1 heading into the ball game and 1-0 in the Big Ten conference with their only loss coming three weeks ago when they played then ranked TCU. Minnesota looked to keep Northwestern from shocking the nation for a third week in a row and scored the first quarter’s only touchdown when RB Mitch Leidner ran in a one yard run capping off a 11 play and 63 yard drive for the Golden Gophers. Northwestern got the ball back off the kick off and promptly marched the ball down the field for 7:01 and scored a touchdown of their own on a Trevor Siemian 11 yard touchdown pass to Justin Jackson to tie the score. Minnesota got the ball back off the Wildcats touchdown and once again marched down the field and scored on another one yard touchdown run by Mitch Leidner to take a 14-7 lead before the half. Northwestern was able to march down the field and kick a field goal before the half as the two teams went into halftime with the score of 14-10 in favor of the Golden Gophers. Neither team scored in the third quarter setting up a potentially exciting fourth quarter, a quarter that got started with a Minnesota Field Goal to extend their lead to 17-10. Northwestern came back to march down the field and put the ball into the end zone to tie the game off a two yard Trevor Siemian run to knot the score up at 17-17. Northwestern continued to play tough teams well as the Wildcats shut out the Badgers in the first half and put ten points of their own up to take a 10-0 lead after one half of football. Would the Wildcats shock the world two weeks in a row? Wisconsin finally got on the board with a third quarter touchdown that came at the 10:44 mark and would not score again until the fourth quarter. The game was within the Badgers grasp until the defense allowed and Miles Shuler 16 yard run in the third quarter and a Jack Mitchell 22 yard field goal in the fourth quarter to put the Wildcats up by the score of 20-7. Wisconsin would edge closer with a Joel Stave 19 yard pass to Kenzel Doe before the Wildcats defense that intercepted three Joel Stave passes and one Tanner McEvoy pass shut down the game.
