Rutgers Scarlet Knights News
11-9-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will take the week off to rest and prepare for their game next Saturday
against the Indiana Hoosiers at home in High Point Solutions Stadium in a Big Ten matchup for both
schools. While Rutgers stays home to rest and watch tape the Hoosiers will be hosting the Penn State
Nittany Lions at home this week in a primer game for Indiana. Indiana heads into this game with a 3-5
record and 0-4 record in the Big Ten. Meanwhile Rutgers has lost three games in a row dropping their
overall record to 5-4 and 1-4 in the conference. Rutgers has struggled to put points on the board all
season long which is evident by only averaging 24.2 points per game, 98th best in the nation. Rutgers
only averages 229.9 passing yards per game and 147.0 rushing yard per game while allowing more
points per game then they average, although the last three contests have skewed that somewhat since
none of the losses for the Scarlet Knights were especially close. Indiana meanwhile has struggled this
season to keep opposing teams off the board allowing an average of 34.8 points per game this season. If
Rutgers is going to beat Indiana and keep the Hoosiers winless in the conference they will have to stop
the 11th best rushing attack in the nation. Indiana averages 274.5 rushing yards per game this season
behind 1,300 yard rusher Tevin Coleman. Get your Rutgers tickets for next Saturday’s home game at
High Points Solution Stadium as the Scarlet Knights host the Indiana Hoosiers. The game time has yet to
be determined but the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network nationally.

Wisconsin put up 37 points in this contest along with 385 yards of total offense including 298 yards on the ground. The complete dominance on the ground helped as Wisconsin had 35:16 of time possession in the contest in a game that was completely dominated from whistle to whistle. With the loss Rutgers record drops to 5-4 and 1-4 in the conference while Wisconsin improved to 6-2 and 3-1 in the Big Ten with the convincing victory. 10-27-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights traveled to Nebraska this week to take on the #16 ranked Cornhuskers on
the road in Memorial Stadium in a Big Ten matchup for both schools. Rutgers came into the contest
with a 5-2 record and a 1-2 record in the Big Ten while Nebraska came in with an impressive 6-1 record
and 2-1 conference record. Nebraska has one of the best rushing attacks in the nation this season and
Rutgers did not have an answer for it and Ameer Abdullah. Abdullah rushed for 225 yards on 19 carries
while scoring three more touchdowns in the contest essentially burying Rutgers in the conference.
Nebraska had 455 total yards in the contest but more importantly were 8-13 on third downs. On the
other hand Rutgers put up 348 total yards of offense but was 4-12 on third down and 0-1 on fourth
down. Nebraska’s 21 first downs to Rutgers 15 first downs really told the story in this contest as the
Cornhuskers edged the Scarlet Knights by the score of 42-24. Rutgers dropped their record to 5-3 and
1-3 in the Big Ten while Nebraska pushed their record to 7-1 and 3-1 in the conference this season. Get
your Rutgers tickets for the next Scarlet Knights game as the team hosts the Wisconsin Badgers next
Saturday at home in High Points Solutions Stadium. The game will be played at 12:00 pm ET and will not be televised on national TV.
10-20-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights traveled to Ohio to take on the #13 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes this week on the road in Ohio Stadium in a Big Ten matchup. Believe it or not the unranked Scarlet Knights actually had a better record coming into the contest at 5-1 and 1-1 in the Big Ten while Ohio State was 4-1 with a perfect 1-0 in the Big Ten. Obviously Rutgers has not played the same competition that the Buckeyes have which can explain the lack of a ranking for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers never stood a chance in this contest as Ohio State completely dominated on both sides of the football from whistle to whistle. Ohio State put up the first two touchdowns of the game and five of the first eight to take a commanding 35-7 lead into halftime. Ohio State came out on all cylinders in the second half as well scoring three more touchdowns in the third quarter as the Buckeyes took a commanding 56-10 score into the final quarter. Ohio State rested their first string players for much of the final quarter as the Buckeyes went on to win the game by the score of 56-17. Rutgers dropped their record to 5-2 and 1-2 in the conference while Ohio State improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten. 10-15-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights took the week off to prepare for one of their toughest challenges of the season next week in the #15 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The good news is that Rutgers has an extra week to prepare for their Big Ten foes but the bad week is Ohio State is also off this week before hosting the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers heads into their bye week with an impressive 5-1 record and 1-1 record in the Big Ten while Ohio State has a 4-1 record and 1-0 conference record this season. Rutgers only loss this season came against the Penn State Nittany Lions while Ohio State’s National Championship hopes were spoiled with an upset loss at home to the Virginia Tech Hokies. If Rutgers wants to keep their three game winning streak alive they will have to stop Ohio State’s quarterback and second leading rusher J.T. Barrett. Barrett has thrown for 1354 yards this season and 17 touchdown passes while rushing for another 276 yards and two touchdowns leading the Ohio State offense. That could be troublesome for the Scarlet Knights as the Rutgers defense hasn’t been the team’s biggest asset this season. The defense is allowing an average of 21.7 points per game which is 46th best in the nation but the team has played the likes of Tulane, Howard, Washington State, Navy, and a struggling Michigan team which skews the stat a tad. The same can be said for the offense that is averaging 267.5 passing yards per game and 159.2 rushing yards per game. The only ranked team that Rutgers has played this season was their only loss at the hands of Penn State. Either way this game looks like it has all the makings of an offensive outburst for both teams which is always fun for the fans. Be sure to get your Rutgers tickets for the next Scarlet Knights game next Saturday as the team travels to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road in Ohio Stadium. The game will be played at 3:30 pm ET and can be seen on ABC and ESPN.
10-6-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted one of their biggest Big Ten rivals in the Michigan Wolverines this week at home in High Point Solutions Stadium. Rutgers was 4-1 entering this contest with their only loss coming in a conference game while Michigan entered the game with a 2-3 record and a 0-1 record in the Big Ten conference. If you showed up late to this contest you probably missed most of the game’s offense as the two teams combined for 36 points in a first half that saw four combined touchdowns and three combined field goals. For much of the first half it seemed like the two teams would trade scoring drives all game long and whoever had the ball last would win the contest. After Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova threw a seven yard touchdown pass to John Tsimis the Scarlet Knights went into the half with a 19-17 lead. Neither team was able to put the ball in the end zone in the third quarter but Rutgers and Gary Nova struck again early in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass while the Scarlet Knights took a 26-17 lead. Michigan would answer with a fourth quarter touchdown of their own but neither team would score again in the contest as the game ended with a 26-24 victory for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights improved their record to 5-1 with a 1-1 Big Ten record while Michigan continues to struggle with their 2-4 record and 0-2 record in the Big Ten. Be sure to grab some Rutgers tickets for the next Scarlet Knights game two Saturday’s from now on October, 18 as they take on the #20 Ohio State Buckeyes on the road in Ohio Stadium. The game will be played at 3:30 pm ET and will not be on national TV unfortunately.
10-1-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted the Tulane Green Wave this week at home in High Points Solution Stadium. Rutgers is 3-1 on the season with their only blemish coming in a Big Ten conference game while Tulane has struggled this season with a 1-3 record on the young season. Rutgers jumped all over Tulane early and often in this game and they started the scoring barrage by quarterback Gary Nova throwing two touchdown passes to Leonte Caroo to put Rutgers up 14-0 after one quarter. Nova hooked up with Andrew Turzilli on a 93 yard pass in the second quarter to put the Scarlet Knights up by the score of 21-0. Tulane’s only scoring drive came late in the second quarter when running back Sherman Badie broke a 86 yard run for a touchdown. The point after attempt failed and Tulane trailed Rutgers by the score of 21-6 at the half. Rutgers managed a field goal in the third quarter and another Gary Nova to Leonte Caroo hookup in the fourth quarter to win the game31-6. Nova threw for 291 yards with four touchdowns and one interception on the day while Rutgers put up 462 yards of total offense to Tulane’s 304 yards. Tulane struggled to move the ball against the Scarlet Knights defense as the Green Wave went 3-15 on third down and were forced to go for it on fourth down three times in the contest, although they did convert those opportunities twice in the game. Rutgers controlled the ball and they controlled the clock en route to their fourth win of the young season. 9-22-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights traveled to Navy-Marine Corps Stadium this week as they faced off with the Navy Midshipmen football team. Navy and Rutgers came into this contest with identical 2-1 records so something would have to give in this game. Rutgers was able to muster 435 yards of total offense on the day gaining 284 of those yards on the ground controlling the ball and the clock. Rutgers won this game by keeping the Navy offense sitting on the bench as the Scarlet Knights held the ball for 35:54 of the 60 minute game rushing the ball 56 times. Navy failed to get their running game going this evening as their quarterback Keenan Reynolds was forced to rush 19 times while only gaining 25 yards. Rutgers had three rushers go over the 80 yard mark in the game which was ultimately the deciding factor. Rutgers improved their record to 3-1 on the season while Navy fell to .500 with a 2-2 record. Get your tickets for the next Rutgers game as the Scarlet Knights will host the Tulane Green Wave at home in High Points Solution Stadium next Saturday.
9-16-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted the Penn State Nittany Lions this week at High Point Solutions Stadium in a Big Ten matchup between two undefeated teams. One team was going to leave the field tonight with their first loss and that team was Rutgers as Penn State rode some good news they received earlier in the afternoon all the way to a 13-10 victory. Penn State had their sanctions and restrictions lifted before the game and the emotions on the field turned out to be too much for the Scarlet Knights to overcome. Rutgers actually had a 10-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter and seemingly had the game in hand before Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg and running back Bill Belton took over for two late scores. Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova had a terrible day posting a 22.5 quarterback rating as he went 15/30 with 192 yards, no touchdowns, and a back breaking five interceptions. Nova did score the only touchdown for the Scarlet Knights on the field as he ran the ball into the end zone on a 14 yard run early in the second quarter. The Penn State defense held the Rutgers offense scoreless in the second half and the Rutgers defense actually had the lead until 1:13 in the fourth quarter before Penn State’s Bill Belton ran it in from five yards out to seal the deal. Get your Scarlet Knights tickets for next week’s game as Rutgers travels to take on the Navy Midshipmen at 3:30 pm ET. The game can be seen on the CBS Network.
9-8-14: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted the Howard Bison this week and won their second straight game of the young year by the score of 38-25. Howard actually had more total yards in this game but Rutgers took advantage of two Bison turnovers and 11 penalties for 100 yards to squeak out a victory. Rutgers threw for 288 yards and rushed for 109 yards while Howard threw for 168 yards and rushed for 269 yards on 42 attempts. Rutgers led 38-13 at the end of the third quarter and let many of their regulars rest while Howard put up two touchdowns which made the game look a lot closer than it really was in the end. Rutgers will host fellow 2-0 team and fellow Big Ten team Penn State next week in primetime so be sure to grab some tickets to see the Scarlet Knights take on the Nittany Lions.
